underneath gearbox

Got underneath the car tonight to investigate a very minor oil leak, narrowed it down to sump gasket i recon. Does the sump come of easily enough or is it a PITA.

While i was under there i noticed i could see the clutch through a round looking inspection hole under the gearbox. Should this hole have a cover to it and mine has dropped off, or is that the way it is?

you should have a rubber grommit sort of thing in there. Get one in as soon as, Its stops all types of crap getting on to clutch., When looking in there that's where most car's oil leaks come from .The rear main seal on crank .. Hope this help GOLDIE

I thought that there should have been some sort of cover to it, as any old bit of road kill could find its way in there, are these cover thingys readily available? maybe i should make a temporary one for now, amazing what you can stick with a bit of silicon!!

Sump is a doddle to get off, the old gasket ends up crumbling. Make sure to check the oil pickup as that's where most of my old gasket ended up!

Funny you should mention silicon... that was the sump gasket on my chim 500

It doesn't look like it's got a gasket, just looks like a bead of silicon in its place................is that because the cork gaskets are sh!t or what?

If you dress the sump with a file you'll see why a gasket is a good idea

As for the grommet in the gearbox, don't panic, I reckon mines been missing for 30k miles and no issues. . . however I did try to get one this week with some other bits but they were OOS . . must remember to get one somewhere else . .

Getting sump off is a doddle once you are up on ramps. Some people, specialists included, down use gaskets and use silicon. i used a cork gasket and have had no issues with it since fitting. Apparently cheap isnt neccessary good as quality of the gaskets can be quite variable. Bought mine from V8D - good quality and good service

I bought one last year from TVR Power - it wasn't a particularly good fit so I used a tie wrap to hold it in place.
