Help guys! Yep, she's running too rich (black exausts, smokey start up etc), but my girl is determind to kill me. Running fine (at whatever speed 30 - 120) but as soon as my foot leaves the fast-forward peddle, she wants to kill me. Example; great run on M3 / M25 / M4 until my A312 run, when approaching Willowtree roundabout, darting in front of a lumbering lorry, the bh decides to stall (at 45mph - WTF??) Spluttered forward (me foot on clutch and revving like fk till I got the engine speaking to me again) (soooo bad a look!). She's due her MOT next Tuesday, and booked in. Any tips here (apart from the match-stick-cloth-variety suggested by my ever helpful boatie neighbours) I love this car. But I can't go on being SCARED of this car. And at the moment, I am... Help!

Classic case of the Engine Temperature Sensor. This should go in the FAQ articles!

You can short it out for now, it'll be a little harder to start but won't run too rich.

Rover SDi or Range Rover use them. Don't get an Intermotor one though, they are rubbish.

You could try measuring it first, cold then hot.

Temp sensor is part number ETC8496 for landrover or 55128 for intermotor (yes the intermotor ones are crap, but i can't seem to find any other brands available anymore)

Easiest way to check if its the temp sensor is at fault is to replace it with a ~330 ohm resistor, saves fannying about replacing it to find out its something else.

Just have to say.. Intermotor is definately ScensoredT If youve seen their parts catalogue.. er magazine.. er.. pamphlet..When i tried to get parts the guy in the shop just stood there with his intermotor bit o paper, shaking his head, I felt like knocking it off.. reminded me of those stupid noddin dogs.. Ive worked in motor factors and parts for cars are made so readily available for all and old cars if you know where to look, Even original parts are available, There is so much stigma as regards to TVRs, I had the same with rovers that ive owned.. But when you find that the problems are trivial and can be fixed you end up with a good reliable vehicle.. I bought a 420 gsi rover (T series)for £300, i put a k&n and a cherry bomb on and its pretty quick.. Ive had it for 3yrs and its always been reliable, We have modern technology on our side and iam going to endeaver to get my wedge just as reliable as iam intending on using it everyday, I dont believe that its good for performance cars to sit idle for periods of time,, They need to be running, Sorry for the long post..

OK, almost running fine now (apart from no temp gauge, tacho of heater fan) but there is still one running problem. When 'blipping' the throttle, very small throttle openings cuase the engine to almost cut out. When the throttle is opened further she runs fine. Can't see any leaks in vacuum hoses etc. Any further ideas?

Karl I see you have a Stag as well, you must be a glutton for punishment ;^) Which lump is in it?

It might be the throttle sensor (round lump next to throttle butterfly), check the resistance varies smoothly especially down the bottom end where it's jumpy. They get worn and can cause this sort of thing.

thumbup I'll give that a go now, I can take the TP off mine!
'My garage' was lying! It was showing some of my previously owned cars as current.
Loved the Stag, well, TBH I love the shape of the Stag and that's about it! frown
The one I had was fitted with a RV8 lump which had been installed by a plumber yikes
Once I had sorted out most of the cables which were just forced into the female half instead of having male connectors crimped on them, and moved the looms away from the exhaust, she was quite good.
I'd like to find a Stag with good body/interior and fit it with an LS! smile
