If I state 10000 miles when getting a quote for car insurance and then I end up doing more than 10000 miles in that year am I uninsured for the miles after 10000? Is there a tolerance? Is 11000 but 20000 not OK?

Just curious...

Did you provide an accurate odo reading when you took out the policy?
If not, how would they check?
If so, then they might check in the event of a big claim.

In the event of a claim they can check on your MOT certificate, but they could only do that if you got your car MOT within a week or so of getting the MOT

mine asked me what mileage the car was on currently, and were happy with a guestimate.

They may be able to check how much mileage the car has done, but not who was driving it at the time. Nothing to say his friend didnt go to scotland every weekend using DOC cover

If the wanted to investigate, they could check MOT records.

My take is, If you've done 11k and your almost at the end of the policy, don't worry about it. If you're only 6 months in and almost at or above £10k then inform the insurer.

I've had to fill in a mileage declaration so assume 1 mile over within the period of cover and I won't be insured.

Saying that I have heard about people ringing the ins co when they're close to the limit, getting it extended for a couple of thousand miles and the costs have not been too extortionate.
