MoT time, and the Zadmobile (1991 XR4x4) is in for it's test. Cars this kinda age almost always need stuff doing, especially when they don't get many miles a year like mine, and are left outside in all weathers. Is it like this being a dad, and waiting for the new sprog?

>Paces up and down waiting for the phone call with expensive news<

Problem is, I could maybe find a decent newer machine half the age for £500, but we've been together a long time and I could never drop her for a beige 1.6 rice box with front wheel drive, manual windows and no personality. At least kids ask "what is it mista?" instead of ignoring it. Although that could be the rattly cam followers that attracts their attention.

Oh it'll be fine. It's old enough it can't fail on emissions right?....right?

And all those 20 year old bushes will be fine I'm sure... And the brake lines won't be corroded...

(Is this helping?)

biggrin

It can fail on emissions, but only CO I think, and they are much higher than catalyst car limits. I replaced the standard cardboard anti roll bar bushes with poly bushes a few years ago. Some of the brake lines were done 3 or so years ago, but it wouldn't surprise me if others needed doing.

Hmm. 1h15m now, taking a fair time.

One rear tyre has a nasty bulge and the two front brake hoses need replacing. £195 inc mot and fitting, ballpark figure. Fingers crossed that they haven't rusted into the front calipers, that could get pricy.

You're not letting the garage doing the MOT work on the car without double-checking the car, are you?

Well, it is my local garage who I trust and have done good work in the past. One time they even fitted f-o-c some disks I supplied as I was having it mot'ed at the same time. They also always keep the replaced parts for the customer to see. Having said that, things do change, and I will be checking the parts.
