As per the thread title really. Driving home tonight it occured to me that they are rarely seen, at least by me, after sunset. Half a dozen breakdowns on the M3 and M25 none of whom were receiving the attention of the wombles.

Serious question though, are they only on duty during the day or do they work shifts to ensure 24 hour coverage?

No they certainly aren't scared of the dark, and you'll only find them with broken down vehicles if either
A) They've just stopped at it and are making sure that all is well, and recovery on route. once this is confirmed they normally leave.
B) They may stay if there is a safety problem with either the location, or the occupants. ie. disabled.

They are not sent to broken down vehicles as "the norm" especially if we are already aware that recovery is on route, and the vehicle is on the H/S (with lights during hours of darkness. If no lights, they'll leave a couple of cones and flashing lights behind the vehicle)

There are a lot less patrols at night than during daytime, as there's not as much traffic, so the patrols are used only where needed, ie RTC's, live lane breakdowns, live lane debris etc.
If nothing at all is going on, they are instructed to park up and not burn the tax payers fuel.
