I'm going to China for a month in September with uni and am a little unsure of how much money to take along.

Google tells me that i will get 1 British pound = 10.5831036 Chinese yuan,

What does that mean in real terms?

Can anybody enlighten me as to how much things usually cost? Can of coke, mars bar Mc Donalds usually seem to be a good starting point!

Ill be spending most of my time in Yangzhou, few days in Bejing, few in Shanghai.

Many thanks!

That won't help a lot. Hopefully your buddy will, make lots quickly. It will cost you less.

It's cheap, a McDs Meal is about £1.50, can of coke about 15p.

You can eat out comfortably in a Chinese restaurant for a fiver a head.

Mind you, I'm basing this on the prices in the commercial city I lived in for three years, where there was no tourism base, so prices were aimed at the locals.

Couple of helpful phrases:

"Neehowww" said like an evil Disney cat is "Hello"

"Bing Peeju" is "Cold Beer".

From memory 500ml of Tsing Tsao beer (pronounced "ching dow") was 4 yuan, or 2 yuan if you bought it from the hostel I was in. It's possible to wake up in the morning hung over and covered in the reminents of last night's dinner and only be £5 down, but that was a couple of years ago.

I was in China for a month in 2006 and spent less than a grand- I had paid in advance for a trip that included the hotels though.

I'll throw in a couple of extra words too.

"Ching" is "Please"

"Zai Jen" is "Goodbye"

"Syeh Syeh" is "Thank you"

"Tai Gwey La" is "It's too expensive", handy if you're shopping.

Oh, and the beer is Tsing Tao, although your phonetics are correct. Tsing Tsao would be "Ching Chow".

3 years of going to China on business has taught me the following phrases.

"Ne heng pio linag" (knee heng pee-ow lee-a) = You're a beautiful lady
"Ne heng ku" (knee heng koo) = You're a cool dude
"Ni hao" (knee how) = Hello
"Shagwa" (Shaguar - like in Austin Powers!) = You're an idiot.
"xie xie" (she shea) = Thank you

I always travel with a translator, except when visiting night clubs and bars.

Its funny to see the different ways we're all trying to teach you chinese! The language relies on subtlties of tones so whilst you think you're doing a great job, the locals will often look totally bemused.

I think the beer is pronounced "chin dow"

I was thinking of TEFL in China for 6 months to a year, when it was suggested I read River Town by Peter Hessler. It's a very good book on his 2 years in China as a teacher, so you might find it interesting. His talk and illnesses due to the pollution levels there has put me off from being there for many months, I'd probably now only go as a 2-3 week holiday.

I was there for 3 weeks last year, its so cheap!

With our guide, eating locally, you could feed all 7 of us with beers too for less than £15! Hotels 3* about £12 a night.

We had hired a taxi driver for the duration, doing between 5-800kms/day we paid him £40/day + fuel & tolls. That was enough to entice him into driving the width of China then home again!

Amazing place!

Can be difficult to get things without a Chinese speaking person with you. (bearing in mind we were pretty much off the tourist trail)

ENJOY! biggrin
