Firstly, apologies to everyone who made the effort to post in the last thread, Hopefully a nerve was struck with the "dealers mentioned"

Well anyway, the car is back. It was ready at midday wednesday, with filthy interior, missing locking wheel nut caps, scratched bumper and no fuel, but more to the point the paint is f**ked from the bird lime. Mainly the roof, bonnet, boot and doors.

It's a bit dirty to post the pic's right now but I will get some up tomorrow when it's cleaned. They're having it back next week for them to machine polish, so i'll need some before and after.

They were expecting me to pay the £250 warranty excess, which is acceptable I suppose. I refused, until the paint is fixed at best.

As for the repair, i've used it every day since and it seems fine and no warning lights so far.....

I thought it would be worth starting a thread as I fear this won't be the end just yet.....

Now the original thread has been deleted can you do a quick summary (mentioning no names) so we can all remember the pain you have been through with the repair?

So you now have the car back with the original fault (hopefully) fixed but now it is returned in bad condition with knackered paint?

Yeah, that's about it, over 7 weeks tho, I will re-do the story when I'm at a pc, not easy on the mobile when you're extremely pissed off!...

Why, coz it's just died, showing "engine fault, reduced power" FFS

Is that right?! That can't be right. Warranty covers everything I thought.

I would definately advise AGAINST a machine polish. My car has been machine polished twice by a dealer/their approved bodyshop and its a mess when viewed in sunlight due to hologram marks.

You have been warned.

Was going to post the same! Get a reputable detailer to quote and bill bmw accordingly! It is the very least they should paying for!

I think I saw your thread about it.
I am gonna speak with the dealer about it, I've got two friends who do "detailing" they both say it needs paint

Looks like it needs to be fixed first tho.....

Missed this one, afraid not, warranty pays for broken bits and labour associated, they fitted 3 parts that didn't fix it, so I had the bill for the 3 bits and all labour associated. If the fix isn't straight forward, anything they "try" you pay for.

Gulp.

Can't believe they're asking you for money.

Have I missed somthing?? OP said in his last thread that the dealer fought a battle with the warranty company on his behalf and won?

Indeed.
But respray vs. detail? Not too sure about that one, personally I would try to avoid a respray at least initially, in my experience causes more problems than it solves.

That's exactly where I was coming from. They are charging the customer for their mistakes. Otherwise what is stopping unscrupulous (no suggestions of that here!) companies replacing this, that and the other in order to bump up the cost?

"Well Sir, to investigate that rattle in the boot we had to replace the engine management system. Unfortunately it did not appear to fix the fault and we need you to pay for the new engine management system."

There is a simple reason why this can't happen, dealers get the directive for a repair straight from the manufacturer.

My understanding is that in the OP's case parts were replaced as part of that directive which happened not to be covered by the OP's policy, obviously as the directive appears to have been off, they paid out.
OP said himself that it was part of the puma so you can't really hold the mechanic responsible for it.

Toxicnerve, probably not going to HW as am currently on business in Moscow but I'll see how it goes.

The warranty is the BMW extended warranty (underwritten by Mondial) sold in the dealerships. I was told the manufacturer warranty does cover everything, but you dont have this option on a 3+ year old car. The warranty does cover pretty much everything, but not parts the car doesnt need!

They were fully intending on giving me the bill, but after much complaining the dealer told me that they were going to cover this under "goodwill"

Here are the pics of some of the damaged panels.

The warranty is underwritten by mondial, but sold on the BMW website and dealer network. If you didn't ask you would think it was BMW warranty.

I fully understand the position of the warranty side. They were happy to pay for every part that was needed, they weren't happy to pay for parts that in the end weren't needed. I'd say the waranty is worth the 1k ish it costs, the repair bill was roumoured to be 10k.

From what I could understand, the dealer will not allow an engineer to spend hours looking for the fault as they can only claim so much from warranty. If nothing comes up from diagnosic work then the PUMA report is sent. BMW AG then return the PUMA report with advise on what to change/fix. If the part was faulty and is covered under the warranty then there's no cost. If it didn't fix it or its not covered then the customer pays.

My bill as paid by the dealer apparently, who knows what they may have added to the warranty claim to even that out

Edited to add, the pics above are pretty crap, the reflections were a nightmare, the stains haven't really showed up but the white ones are right through the laquer

Carefull with your comments mate you don't want a lawsuit on your hands.

Your warranty policy isn't fair end of. Personally I think that the dealer should have put in a goodwill claim straight off the mark, but they obviously done so anyway. You said in thread 1 that you "caught a wiff" that it might be waived (so you weren't involved in this appeal probably), which would imply that they didn't have every intention of making you pay (contrary to your above statement) and that actually they must have had something in the works all along.

I did say "may"

I was warned on numerous occasions that the next fix may incur charges and was told in possibly week 5 that my new service person was trying to help me out, that was 3 weeks after the first charge

This is unfortunately becoming standard practice even under the original 0-3yr warranty. Dealers won't spend time on diagnosis as they can't claim it back. Don't know what the answer is there.

The issue of asking the customer to pay for parts which don't correct the fault is ridiculous.
