the cynic in me says most of the "limited to 155" can only do 156 so as to look faster than they are.

Toyota Supra was limited to 112 but could do 186ish.

BMW E60 M5 and the M6 was limited to 155 yet can do over 200.

The old 850csis were able to go up to about 185 as well.

Apparently the E46 M3 can do 285 kph which is about 170ish?

Although some of the smaller engined BMWs like older 525s have a 155mph limiter but cant actually do 155...

e46 m3 - General (sensible) consensus is a genuine 170 - 175 mph.

I've done 164 mph genuine in mine and it was still accelerating.

An unrestricted E46 M3 should be good for between 160-165MPH. Gearing is the main reason.

However something like an E60 M5, in healthy fettle, should be able to crack 200MPH unrestricted.

I've heard the same. Admittedly, the chap was trying to sell it to me at the time, so could have been bragging, but I've known him since school and he's not really the type to exaggerate. He doesn't need to, he's minted biggrin

It'll definitely do more than that.

As I said above, I've had mine at 164mph and it was certainly still accelerating, albeit not very quickly.

Gearing is still good at that point as you are getting towards the top of the revs in 5th. Whether acceleration would stop once you changed into 6th I don't know.
