Say you have £60k and 60yo and a curious passion for all this BMW and want two cars:
Car 1:
Will not depreciate
Bonkers
Reliable
Modern
Iconic
Can be used daily if required.
Used as a "fun" car.
Car 2:
Reliable
Stylish
Practical
Frugal
Quick(ish)
Daily to do 15-20k pa.
I have suggested BMW M3 CSL and a new Alpina D3 Touring Bi-Turbo. What you guys reckon?

Z4 M Coupe
335/535d Touring/Saloon M sport depending on need.
Actually the new 330d has excellent reviews and whilst not as powerful as the 335d, I consider it over the 335 and get a newer/lower mileage/better spec for the same budget.
Oh come to think of it, the new X5 4.0d sounds very good, but wouldn't leave much change, so maybe an E39 M5 to go with that one.

Cheers for the ideas folks.
I think Car1 has been less talked about. Sure most agree than an CSL is an almost depreciation proof tool that is devastatingly effective.
Car2 has proved more debatable. We ultimately want a new 535d Sport (or 530d Sport) and want to wait until these become available on second hand market.....car must be changed now due to company policy on a car 4+ yrs old.
A 3yr old Alpina D3 should offer minimal depreciation for its ilk doing good MPG etc. The lack of a "proper Alpina" on the drive should be filled by the CSL.
Question...what would you prefer? A 320d Business Edition or a Alpina D3? QED.

If it was me it would. I drive a 530iBut its my father. And he has a 530d. So want 40mpg+ cheaper tax etc. He will only accept a diesel.
Wants a cheap to run car for a year to tide him over until the new 530d becomes more available. A 320d is the best on his radar but convinced him a Alpina jobby would be better. He would dismiss the 330i as too expensive to wrong. You and I know otherwise!
So 320d, A4 2.0TDI or Alpina D3 for a year. I know what I would choose.
