A broken Group B car fails to win....hmmmm.

Anyway RIP Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto, some superb driving in that clip and to carry on with a potentially broken hand to finish 3rd, what a competitor. Thanks for posting.

I've been working my way through loads of these Eighties Irish and Manx rally vids. Interestingly the 4wd Group B cars took a long time to appear and then only had an impact in 85 and 86 (then were banned).

The bumpy tarmac Manx and Irish roads seemed to constantly break Audi quattro transmissions. The simpler live axle RWD cars, like the Escort, Ascona, Chevette and the Group B Manta 400 absolutely ruled these roads. The rear wheel drive strangle hold was eventually broken by the emergence of the full international spec 6R4.

In part this can be explained by the fact that these weren't part of the World Rally Championship, so Peugeot only ever sent clubman spec cars. Mind you Audi did at least try, even sending Michele Mouton in an S1 over for the Manx in 86 but it ended in disaster for them.

They never enjoyed flying, there was too much 'mass' ahead of the front axleline and so would nosedive breaking driveshasts etc... We went out to the IOM in 2009 and some of the roads used for the stages are unbelievably bumpy... (not so much potholed as sharp hillocks that at a sedate 25mph feel like you'd tear the sump guards off on each 'landing') - At rally speeds in the 80's the quattros really wouldn't have enjoy it.
