Hi,

Just washed my MX5 after not using it for a fortnight, and found the drivers-side footwell sodden. I don't think it was me washing it that caused this, as there are signs of dampness in the car, as though it's been like it for a while.

Last time I used the car it was raining hard however. Oh, and now I think about it, I was bringing it back from the dealer where it had had new brake pads fitted. They'd cleaned it and no doubt used a high pressure hose on it. rolleyes

Only thing I can think of (other than a numpty with a high pressure hose blasting it, which has only just occurred to me) is a blocked drain somewhere.

I've had the car about four months and there's been not a sign of water ingress up until now, but I've got the mat out draped over a garden chair and the water is pouring out. It's not been that wet recently although there've been a few downpours.

Anyone got any thoughts, ideas or suggestions?

Standard points to check:

  • Roof drain holes
  • Where the ariel joins the body
  • Rear lights
  • Mounting points for the hard top (took me a long time to take that leak

Just a bit of an update. Got the car into the dealers today. Tried a different one after not being too impressed with the one I'd used before, totally different experience, really helpful, very knowledgeable, and the mechanic was very happy to show me exactly what he'd done, the bits he'd replaced, and why.

Anyway, upshot is that both filter drains were blocked, so the water that runs off the back of the hood couldn't run through the drains and out through the rear wheel arches like it should and overflowed into the cabin instead. There is also a new type of drain filter which is less prone to blocking, so he's fitted these for me.

Whole job took an hour and a bit whilst I waited, and we're back to waterproof, wayhay!

And fortunately we've had some decent weather since the weekend, so with a judicious combination of leaving the car for an hour or two with the engine running and heater on full blast into the footwells, and then a few hours in the sunny weather with the top down, it seems to have dried up perfectly inside, phew.

So if anyone's reading this on a search having experienced similar, get the car to a good Mazda mechanic, it's very sortable I'm pleased to say.

Ari,

It's worth checking them on a regular basis (more so over winter).

I used to use a metal coat to unblock them (normally everytime I washed the car)

I did think a full metal jacket to clear a drain hole was a bit excessive laugh
