My mate's about to lease a new M3(lucky sod) and wants a convertible. As it's a lease car BMW insist it has DCT and 19" wheels.

I thought I read somewhere that EDC was worth having but the dealer has told him that unless he's tracking the car (he won't)it's not worth the extra £1,200. He will drive the car hard so what's the opinion here?

Definitely worth getting, use it on the M6 all the time and if it works as well on the M3 then do it.
Also Bluetooth (if it isn`t standard).

I'd say don't bother. I drive mine fairly hard, but the sporty setting just makes it ride very badly with no discernible benefit.
You might want it on a perfectly smooth track, but not on British roads IMO.

I would definately go for it - EDC provides three settings, so there is a soft (a relative term) which is what I use 90% of the time, normal which I use for the other 10% of the time. I guess 'sport' is for the track or ultra smooth continental roads - I have probably driven less than 10 miles of the 15,000 miles using sport (in my M3 saloon).

I thought that the view of the difference in residual with/without EDC would mean that the lease cost would not be that different whichever way you went. That is what I was told in early 2009 when BMW had a special lease deal to try and shift new M3's.

I would spec EDC, have it now and use it with m-button settings, provides a good way to bring a sharper feel to the car when you want it (agree it's too hard on most roads when on hardest setting, but still worth while)..the fact you can flick between settings instantly and tie it to M button is a definite benefit IMHO.
