Does anyone know if there are any tuners out there specialising in turbo'ing M engines?

G-Power do a kit for the S50 lump, with their Evo3 iteration putting out 510bhp. That kind of power requires different pistons and rods, as well as intercooling and Alfa-N engine software set up. Costs are in the region of £20k for the kit from them, but it is so worthy wink

Simpson Motorsport do a stage 1 supercharger install to 450bhp, although max I've seen is 700bhp on an S54 engine.

Last time we were at the 'ring there was a zm3, which if I remember correctly was running over 500bhp. We got chatting to the owner who had opted for converting the car to run a supra turbo engine rather than going to the expense of tuning the S50.

Beedub- supercharged Im guessing? Would you mind giving me some details on who did the work and what was involved.

The general consensus seems to be that the S50 is quite a problematic beast when dealing with forced induction.

Both of these were done on US spec S52 3.2 engines which are very different to our S50s... You will need to spend serious wonga to get reliable power north of 500bhp with a turbo or a supercharger. Standard internals will not support more than 0.7bar boost, you will need to cool it and map it to perfection (or be ultra conservative) and use V-Power fuel and nothing else. I have the original bills for the whole G-Power conversion on the car and we are looking at more than DM160,000, which in real money today is around £75k, excluding the purchase price of the car...

The S50 is more fragile than the S54 lump, so

simpson motorsport did the work, they did a very good job, the install was perfect, it took them about 3-4days, theyve done quite afew conversion on the s50-4 engines, i believe mine is the first z4m to be done with the much more complicated ECU, anyhow the car runs perfectly, better than it did stock infact, idle is digitally smooth, theirs lovely liniear power all round, and higher up in the revs where the stock engine ran out of steam this thing just hammers the road, the car feels perfect at this power, my particular car was owned and babied by me from new, it currently has about 9800miles, supercharging really suits these engines, everythink about it is pretty much perfect, when im taking it steady, mpg is the same, drivability is better, performance is now in a different league, the type of performance that will get you in serious trouble, when i was at simpson they were telling me of a z3m coupe they had recently completed, i can promise you they are the business when it comes to supercharging your bmw. i have say my z4m looked nice next to 2 f40 lemans they had their ;-) proper tuner

I spoke to Simpson and they wont touch the s50 engine with a barge pole. Not to be deterred I spoke to Thorney Motorsport and they haven't had experience in forced induction on BMW's. They were still willing to have look at it though.

I'm determined to turn it into a monster but with the general consensus about s50 engines being unsuitable, I may have to start thinking about swapping mine in for an S54. I am reluctant to do this since Ive nurtured the car for nearly 8 years and kept the mileage relatively low at 45k... frown
