Blue Chim in a ditch in Scunthorpe.

WARNING, LONG POST - GET A CUP OF TEA!
As hinted by Joolz, I saw this, on the way back from the annual 'spend the equivalent of the GDP of a small African Nation at Kirton Garden Centre for Mother's Day' trip. I was in the Avensis (anyone who values their paint job wouldn't have had a TVR out in Scunny yesterday - wind + sand =
). I was travelling in the opposite direction (from the Tesco roundabout back up towards Mum's house in Burton S) and some distance away. The guy lost it coming off the roundabout where Tesco used to be, back end stepped out and he came off backwards and in to the field on the Flixborough side. About 7' down and not really what you would call an embankment - more of a sheer drop (this might have saved him actually). You can see where he came off if you look at the verge - go look at the drop, it had my sphincter doing overtime. TBH was really concerned about whether the car had rolled and what condition I would find the driver in (you know what I mean
).
Anyway - it looks a lot like it didn't go down the 'embankment' (no marks on the ground, no soil up the tailpipes), but just went out in to mid air and dropped - it was on all four wheels and not a mark on the body. Driver and passenger were both fine and didn't want any help. He said the only thing that was hurt was his pride. (Thank God
).
I asked him if he was a Pistonheader and he said no. Didn't really think that was the time to try and recruit him
. Seemed a really nice chap though, I think with me being a bird in a toyota, he expected loads of 'holier than thou' crap, but he was really nice when I said I was a fellow tivver and anything I could do etc etc. He was so pleasant, and level headed that if anyone spots him again (starmist blue, R reg), he'd be a credit to the PH fraternity.
Can't work out why he went off - roads were by then dry, I went twice round the roundabout and there was nothing on the road (spillage etc), which only really leaves either too much speed, steering error, binary throttle, not transferring the weight to the front wheels for the turn, or mechanical failure?
I'm stumped - I guess we all make the odd mistake; some of us get away with it (or do it on an airfield), some of us pay .
Anyhow - to the positive bit. I've said before on PH that 'speed' runs down the female line of our family (how weird?) - my sister has a Chimaera 4.5 and I have a Griff 500, and our Mum is, well, a bit 'special'
. After we'd left this incident, I was a bit quiet. Mum (who is 73 and who can handle the Griff very competently) said 'just pull in for a second, will you?'. Then I got the 'Mummy Lecture'. She said 'I know what you're thinking - don't even bother, you love your car, you know what it's capable of, this is why you've taken all the extra training. It gives you more pleasure than anything else you own. Just cos some guy got it a bit out of shape doesn't mean that you will, or even that you won't - it changes nothing. Life is too short to worry about what might happen - I'd rather see you in the TVR with your eyes shining, laughing your head off and living every moment, than living a shadow of a life forever. This is not how I brought you up, so sort your head out'.
(NB For all those PHers who say that 'old people' should not be allowed to drive - I'm thinking that you'd be safer, and have more fun, as a passenger with my mum than half the 4x4 drivers or middle lane morons I've seen who are a fraction of her age. You've got it wrong; it's not about age, it's about attitude - I learned that this weekend.)
Of course, Mum's lecture didn't stop the obligatory nightmare last night where I got out of the 'Vensis and found the chap's car shiny-side-down and couldn't get him out. So I popped in on the way home tonight to talk to Joolz about putting a roll bar in the Griff 
.
Perhaps I'll book another RideDrive and a few more track days as well.
Conclusions:
No-one hurt - good
Really nice chap - good
Mum in mid-70's with a great attitude to life and still loves a fast car - good
Joolz prepared to dump everything and talk about a roll-bar for his ex Mrs - good (as if we don't all think he's fantastic already

thankfully not me - tho thanks Ray for the thought...there are a few Tivs in North Lincs but coz we don't have a region of our own we tend to hijack other peoples....good job you were around Rude Girl it's bad enough making a t*t out of yourself without having some "holier than thou turkey" having a go at you too .... lot nicer to have a fellow Tivver console you instead...

Diesel? Petrol station where Tescos used to be? Several times I have been caught on these to such an extent that I tend to drive like a big girls blouse round roundabouts which have fuel stations near them..... Just a thought...

Re roll bar. I've ordered one from Tower View Racing. Its made by Roll Centre in Cambridge and its the only one I could find that looks like it will actually withstand a roll. By all accounts, the factory one for example, isn't up to the job.
I'll post some piccys once its fitted (in about 4 weeks). I would be interested in what Joolz suggests though.

I'm very embarrassed Corrine. Sorry. I think I must have been half asleep. Need to keep a wake in future. I think it was because you mentioned up in Scunthorpe, and I know Jo's up there somewhere in the Leeds area, and you're Derby area. Rude Girl, I don't know you, never met you but after reading that post all I can say is you're a star!
As for you Mum, you're so right, it's attitude that counts, I've just circumnavigated the M25 and there must be more morons per square mile on that strip of tarmac than anywher in the world.

There's no petrol station near there - the nearest is at Kirks Korner. The old Tesco's filling station is closed now. You thinking of somewhere else? Don't paint me as a rescuing angel anyone! I showed up, asked if they were ok and if they wanted anything. They had it all under control and spectators don't add much value so I cleared off
. Anyway, it did some good, because the thought of how easily it might have toppled over down that bank has made me think more seriously about investing in a roll bar.
