Having a reshuffle of cars and priorities. The Porsche is going and making way for a cheaper Mk1 Mx5 with hopefully lower running costs!

Looking for a new or nearly new car around £20K mark on a PCP deal. Will be used for a weekly commute 350 miles, yearly trip to France and occasional motorway driving (15000 miles total). Need enough space for 2 and the dog (springer).

The car has to have a balance of fun and frugality, also a nice place to be in within the budget. Can a diesel be fun? looking to hear from owners.

The list to test drive so far is:

BMW 123d - Ugly!,
Alfa Brera 2.4JTD - suspect chassis?
Honda CRZ - Not sure if it will be big enough.

Obviously there will be some compromise as the budget is small, looking for other options.

No VW's or Foci.

Cheers

Good shout, hadn't thought about that. Slightly older than I wanted to go. Having owned a 330Ci Msport which I though was a little dull to drive, how much have Alpina tweaked the chassis?

Ah bugger, the dog hates the dark;)

Well after racking my brain I can only come up with the new Subaru Impreza 2.0d. Not really taken with the looks buy what about the chassis?

The AlpinaD3 has been ruled out by SWIMBO as too large and the CRZ to small.

The Brera is ticking all the boxes but have reserves over MPG by all accounts it pretty poor. Can't get excited by the 123d even though it has a better chassis and engine than the Brera according to car mags.

Heart Brera
Head 123d

Not the most exciting choice of cars but both have a bit of poke and offer half decent MPG with the bonus being able to forget about repairs being under warranty.

It might be a bit old, but how about a late E46 3-series? Far better looking than the 1-series and not actually much bigger.

Did you not have a Megane TDCi sport in UK? 175 bhp and the full Megane sport cup chassis?

Seem to remember EVO running one as a long termer. Not the best when looking at it, but handling might be just what yuo're looking for.

They did do an Estate version. And a "compact" for that matter. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the 3-series touring is actually the smallest 3-series variant (apart from the compact, obviously).

Was going to be mischievous and suggest a diesel Cayenne wink

Classifieds reveal there's load of petrol engines ones on the market for substantially less than 20k. Ouch those residuals must have hurt ! But bargains to be had if you can take the pointing and sniggering.

A weekly commute of 350 miles alone is 18,000 miles per year.

If you've got a lightweight sports car as a 2nd car, then why not something totally different for daily duties.

Sure one of these must be in budget. Fairly frugal with a 2.8 CRD. And very much fun, but in a totally different kind of way. Removable roof and doors and a fold down windscreen mean it'll offer different thrills in the summer. And the AWD ability will keep you going in the winter snow.

They have a more rugged than luxurious interior, but air con, iPod connector, auto, PAS and all the other usual items are all available still.

As an additional bonus they are also fairly rare and exclusive.

Available in SWB and LWB depending on how many doors you want.

Just a thought anyway smile
