Have seen two volvos locally, I need a long distance crusiser to get me to and from blackburn in comfort etc, both are autos

the question is, how bad are they on the juice? I don't tend to push it on the motorway.

Or shall I stump up for a higher mileage D5 Auto (x2 the price of the petrol ones)

have had the fortune of ofwning an s70 t5 (for sale atm smile) and current owner of an s60 t5, both manuals... on the motorway it is certainly possibly to break well into the 30s with a bit of clever driving... easily possibly to get it down into single figures when you let rip though!!! superb at eating the motorway miles up though!

My W-reg V70 2.4 will get 40mpg-ish at 70mph with the cruise control (auto box). Economy is pretty similar for a T5 so I hear, especially a newer one (I have been told that 30mpg mixed is expected); I will probably upgrade to one when I find the correct one.

I've heard those 2.4s get 40mpg cruising at 70mph, what sort of mpg do you see from a carefully driven mixed tank?

It's never carefully driven I'm afraid! I mainly use it in urban surroundings and average 26-ish, which I don't think is that bad in stop/start and never being able to 'flow'.

The diesels hold their prices ridiculously well, the trade-off isn't worth it. Plus it sounds rather good...

Had an S60 T5 auto and would average 26MPG over a tank (mixed driving) and on a run I would see 30MPG without too much of a problem. However, I did notice that if you started driving a bit quicker (like 85MPH or more on the motorway) the MPG would tail off quite quickly. At that type of speed it would drop to around 26MPG or less, so sticking to 75 or so and it would leap back up again.... I am sure a scientist could explain it down to aerodynamics and gearbox.

Good car and liked it (would have another).

Pretty much exactly what happens on my V70. Mind, I'm perfectly happy at 70 on the motorway so it doesn't bother me.

Fair enough. wink

I'm just looking at a manual 2.4 S80 is all, it will be spending most of it's life at 60/70mph cruising on A-roads to and from work. If they're doing 40mpg at 70mph, I'm hoping to get a 35mpg mixed tank.

And yes, the diesels do hold their value ridiculously well. How do you mean the trade off isn't worth it, which trade off? The price I was looking at spending on a 2.4, you'd get a diesel with well over 200,000miles on it, in below average condition!

my experiences exactly...

and it is down to drag being exponential with speed, not linear (science mode over)...

If you are using the reading from the DIM to establish your MPG do consider that on my S60 D5 163 the DIM states I get 46-52 mpg generally in driving (I don't do much urban) BUT the reality is 34-39mpg when I actually calculate the cost of fuel used. Like the speedo, the fuel computer is very optimistic.

I meant the outlay in cost of car vs petrol used. I only do 7-8k a year I reckon.

Ah, yes. Thought that's what you meant, but lack of sleep = I have the dumb.

Would take me 2 years at 16,000miles/year to break even with the reduced cost of fuel in comparison to the purchase price of the car.

Thanks for the responeses guys smile

I'll stick with petrol, although I have spied a nice looking Saab 9-5 aero hot, again automatic that is slightly more expensive but has half the mileage.

Tempting, although I know the stereo in the volvos is much better.

Mine had the optional extra stereo - Dolby was it? Anyway, was nice and sounded good. But its not a patch on the Mark Levinson that I have in the Lexus. Its utterly fantastic and I have yet to reach the limits of its abilities.

the stereos are superb using any yardstick...

but honestly you won't be dissapointed with the volvo or the saab
