At the weekend I went online and renewed the subscription to my Roadpilot Microgo (little speed camera gadget). I also updated the database after I'd done this which appears to have now "bricked" the device - possibly because they don't process subscriptions til the next working day.

So this morning I rang them up. Recorded message - they're on a summer break til the 9th August. Then it gives an email address. So I email it. Auto-reply: on holiday til 9th August and "your enquiry will be addressed upon our return". WTF?

Are Roadpilot some kind of tinpot outfit run by some bloke and his wife out of the kitchen of their 3 bed semi in Surbiton or something? Am I expecting too much for a company to have some form of cover at all times - even if it's just by email - and not all ps off on holiday at the same time? Am I expecting too much?

This is an automatic response to your question as am on holiday until the 14th. Please do not reply, but will get back to you once browned off.

Edited for stupidity.

Funnily enough, I've been to the RoadPilot factory, when I was looking for some large scale custom AV stuff a few years ago. Its a smallish industrial unit, and a summer shutdown seems sensible at that scale. Pity they couldn't leave someone to man the phones though.

I work for a company who supply equipment to people in the motorhome industry and alot of the people we deal with seem to take a few weeks holiday this time of year.

Just a shame we dont!

A lot of firms in the automotive industry take holidays in August, not only in the UK but also in Europe.

Indeed - however I am more than a little surprised that they offer no cover or tech support whatsoever. Very unprofessional (in my opinion). I've worked for a lot of small companies over the years and never seen this.
