Hi,

As per the title really. Me and the OH are off for a weekend away shortly and we've randomly picked The Cotswolds without ever having been before.

To stay we're thinking olde worlde pub (or possibly a B&B) on a budget - say £80 a night absolute maximum, preferably less. Extra points for anywhere with a good selection of food and drink.

Any ideas? smile

do you want proper Cotswold looking places?

In that case, search around Burford, Stow, Bibury, Bourton.

Yep, I suppose it's worth doing it properly. Mostly just looking for some character and good (and reasonably affordable) food/drink.

Thoughts so far include The Ebrington Arms in Chipping Campden, The Redesdale Arms in Moreton-in-Marsh and The Fox Inn at Burford.

Chipping Campden is in a nice area with good Pubs and B & B's.

The Italian there on the high street used to be superb.

In case anyone else is looking in this area, it turns out my parents stayed at this place and it was superb apparently (The White Hart in Winchcombe):

It's fully booked for this weekend though. Suspect we may struggle to find anywhere decent at this timescale. irked

We stayed here when we last visited the area. Nice place, good location and reasonable rates.

Note: I have no connection with the place other than as a satisfied customer.

Eh? ...Evidently not posh enough.

They mostly raved about some sort of in-house wine shop? It's a moot point either way as it's fully booked.

ETA Russell's does look good, but it's £300 a night room only on Friday according to the website (and fully booked on Saturday).

Well we've booked this place:
http://www.cotswolds.info/accommodation/banbury-lo...

We were actually facing a bit of a dilema - I can't get out of London until rush hour on Friday, which meant it'd be too late for a good dinner by the time we got to the Cotswolds, so we're overnighting at a place called The Duck Inn in Aston Clinton first. My OH doesn't yet know that we're making a pilgrimage to the birthplace of Aston Martin enroute the following morning. She also doesn't that we might be going to the VSCC meeting at Prescott at some point over the weekend. whistle

Oh oh oh, the Red Lion in Long Compton. Go every year. Possibly a little over budget but lovely food, great beer, excellent staff yet it still feels like a country pub.

Go to Hook Norton for the brewery tour and lots of lovely beer.

Outskirts of Banbury isn't quite the Cotswolds wink

You're not far off the door step though for proper Cotswold touring - Stow on the Wold, Burford, The Slaughters etc.

^^^^ edge of Banbury isnt proper Cotswolds Character

Places to go to are (in order of preference IMO)

Broadway (I live near there so am biased!)
Upper and Lower Slaughter
Bourton on the Water (a bit busy and touristy but pretty)
Chipping Camden
Cheltenham
Stow on the Wold
Winchcombe
Moreton in Marsh
Tetbury
Cirencester

Lots of B&B's in all of those places. As metioned Russells in Broadway is good, also Dormy House Hotel just outside Broadway is excellent. If you want an excellent (but not cheap meal) you can try Buckland Manor (ties are compulsory for gents) or 5 North Street, Winchcombe

5 North Street, Winchcombe produces some very odd tasting/gourmet menus. But then again, I'm a great fan of tinned mackerel, so what do I know...smile

As mentioned, Cheltenham is a fine town to visit and mooch around. If you do get there, make the effort to have a meal at http://www.lechampignonsauvage.co.uk/. You'll have one of the best food experiences available anywhere!

The Royal Oak, North Woodchester.
Great little pub with a good bunch of locals if you fancy a chat over your ale.
Tasty freshly cooked food.
Petrolhead Landlord.

What more could you ask for?
