Whose had an insurance claim turned down?
Discussion
So whose had an insurance claim turned down?
Not me personally however there is an identical topic in Biker Banter and was keen to give the topic more exposure in here.
Everyone seems to say that Insurance companies will do whatever they can to get out of claiming, however I have never met anyone that has ever had a claim turned down...
Over to you.

Claims ratio on motor policies is absurdly high, to the point that the only profit is from money on account.
So, generally speaking, an insurers first line of defence is to try to nullify the claim. Shouldn't be overly suprising non?
Not surprising no, however I know the FSA put a lot of pressure on insurers doing things by the book and what with most peoples opinions on insurance companies I wanted to understand if the whole "insurers don't pay out" was a complete rumor or if people actually have had claims turned down for whatever reason. So, generally speaking, an insurers first line of defence is to try to nullify the claim. I claimed for a pair of trousers through the house insurance.
I had 10 pints of Stella, some rum and a really hot curry.
Due to circumstances, my body rejected one, both or possibly all three.
As a direct result, the trousers and indeed underpants were a write off.
I was told I couldn't claim as it 'wasn't an accident'
I feel cheated, there is no way I s
t myself on purpose

Brilliant. Worryingly though, I am sure someone has tried this in the past.
They have investigators who will ensure the claim is genuine and justified, I wouldn't say that they 'try and get out of them' as such, they're just protecting themselves from fraud etc.
I made a total loss claim on an S2000 that met an untimely end in a barrier on the M20 on a rainy morning, I was interviewed for an hour or so but my claim was watertight, and it ended up costing them about £18k.

There's also an element of claims staff (not all by any stretch) who take it personally and will reject or reduce a claim out of some misplaced idea of loyalty, machismo or whatever.
My view always was that the premium had been paid and an Insured would get all they were entitled to. No more, no less. The fun was catching the frauds and sometimes giving more than some people had claimed. Old dears were favourite for the latter often underestimating the value of their great grandmother's engagement ring.

I have had two turned down, and coincidentally both were for stolen motorcycles and both for the same reason:
That the insurance companies didn't believe I kept them in my shed at home (despite the fact one of them was stolen from work anyway!!!).
It took months of arguing to get those paid out. THe assessors were definitely looking for an excuse NOT to pay- hence wanting to look at my shed despite the theft from work.
Might be particular to motorbikes because I have had large house and car claims that were very straight forwards.

Two, both when I was a student.
First car was stolen and refused to pay out as I'd answered a vaguely worded question incorrectly. Basically it asked whether a previous accident was my fault and I answered no and not yes. result was premium refunded.
Second car was stolen, and refused payout because I had aftermarket wheels on it. They were the same size, and made of the same material, and I didn't declare them. Stupidly I'd sent a photo to show what good condition my 20 year old car was in. Premium refunded which covered the cost of the car, like WTF!?
So yes, they do wriggle. And now i tell them if it has an aftermarket air freshener.

I've never had one refused.
The at fault question isn't your opinion, it is what the insurers decided. If you had told them the truth your insurance would have been more expensive.
Same again with the second, you lied in order to get a cheaper policy.

To be honest, they were perfectly justified as you lied to them when taking out your insurance. First car was stolen and refused to pay out as I'd answered a vaguely worded question incorrectly. A lie (also called prevarication, falsehood) is a known untruth expressed as truth.worsy said:

I didn't lie.

They have no right, and no grounds to deny the claim other than what their "surveyor" (Experience: used to own a roofing company, hardly an appropriate qualification imo) claims the roof failed due to poor workmanship.
Odd how it's been standing for ~40 years if it was built so poorly.
Without knowing the full story (type of roof, materials, method of construction) they 'might' have a point. All things being equal roofs (excluding certain types) are generally expected to last more than just forty years.Odd how it's been standing for ~40 years if it was built so poorly.
What happened?
I had my claim for my bike refused. I fell off it on the Isle of Wight and knocked myself out (plus broke collar bone). It was later stolen when I was still in hospital and they refused as I had failed to secure it....even though I wasn't conscious.
This was at the start of June and today the Police rang to inform me they have recovered it! I've been told there is damage to it and someone has apparently tried to remove the paint. If it looks as comedy as I'm picturing I'll put a photo up after I collect it next week.

My parents had similar issues after the "hurricane" in 87. Assessor argued that the claim should not be allowed as house was under-insured, roof was poorly constructed etc. Turned out the assessor was a jewellery expert, and my dad a surveyor. He proved the house rebuild cost was accurate (especially as the insurance comppany had stated in writing due to his profession he could exclude professional fees from the cost when he first took out the policy) and of course a jewellery assessor stood no chance on construction issues.I'm going to f

The end result was that rather than reduce the amount of the claim it actually doubled!
Me. I have.
Motor claim. Refused on the grounds that I didn't have permission to drive the car I was driving. Despite the fact the owner was with me when we crashed.
I ended up writing a cheque for 35,000 quid.
Expensive day.
Hence why I am ALWAYS urging people NEVER to scrimp on insurance.
