Radiator Fans

Forgive me if this has been asked before.

Regarding the two radiator fans, which order to they come on? The thin or thick one first? Is 1 of linked to the AC, if so which 1?

The reason I am asking is I think 1 may not be working because there maybe a broken wire and I was looking to an easy way to fault find.

Unplug the water temp sender (it's in the water rails under the cover behind the fans) and start the engine. The ECU will switch on both fans due to detecting a fault with the temp sender (and also the MIL light on the dash).

Big one first then small if the temp goes up another couple of degress

Small fan is linked to AC via the trinary switch on the receiver/drier bottle in the front nearside wing.

Both fans are controlled by the ECU. As above, unplugging the temp sender makes the ECU use a default temp above the switching temp for the fans so both should come on with it disconnected.

Oh, and FWIW the LHS one on mine seems to be cutting in first (not sure if that's how it should be or not, still a work in progress for me).

Sorted the problem.

The fans were working, but somebody (no, it wasn't me)had previously managed to swap the fans plugs over. The little (RH) one was cutting in first. Confirmed this by removing the sensor plug and the fuse for fan2, and the big fan (LH) stopped. Swapped the leads, replaced the fuse and everything appears fine. I have added some coloured tie wraps to the leads, so it shouldn't happen again.
