(re: the title i'd run out of characters i am not a gangsta!)

i stopped getting Autocar about 2 years ago (i think) and i haven;t bought Car or anything like that for at least a year... and now I keep getting surprised by cars i see as i drive or walk about.

I saw a dreadful peugeot thing which ultimately turned out to be a 3008 (i think).
I have seen some sort of mid-sized vauxhall suv thing
I have seen a subaru outback (probably quite a good car) which i think may now be it's own model rather than a legacy with bits on (although sure the same underneath)..

..who else has seen things of late that seem to have 'appeared from no where'..? i know all the 'young people' will know because frankly that's what you do when you're a young 'enthusiast'. but now i am pleased to be purging my brain of such stuff..!

Kia are steadily creeping up the ladder and are starting to make relatively groovy little boxes on wheels these days.

i just checked - the legacy and the outback are the same...i just didn;t know there was a new legacy either..!

_____

toyota avensis - there's a new one of those i note! looks smaller than before, quite edgy. not too bad in the world of appliance design. perhaps a good company car..??

______

i am aware of the c'eed. good 'normal' cars.
there's a small one..that might actually be a hyundau..it looks a bit like something that's available as a suzuki and a vorks-orl (possibly one these 3 cars might be called a Splash). i bet they're quite good for the elderly.

I noticed this after I stopped subscribing to Autocar )(years ago now). Previously I could have named almost any car on the road.

Nowadays I'm still fairly good, but I simply can't be bothered to keep track of dull cars. The only motoring mags I get now are Motor Trend, Bronco Driver, Practical Performance Car, Retro Cars, Classic American and similar. Way too many interesting cars out there to worry about the "white goods". wink

I still buy CAR, Evo and Top Gear most months - and AutoCar if they have something interesting in it - but mostly I skip over the gruel. I think once I could afford to insure something better, I started to lose interest in the boring tin.

i even bought retro cars again this week... okay so like everything from that publisher it's uncritical fanboi stuff... and it's badly written... and it take 5 mins to flick through.

but at least there's some interesting stuff! i really want a dropped-hillman avenger estate on silly wheels now..!

so bored of niche nich nichety niche nonsense.
do they sell many of the opel version of the vauxhal suv thing..? i can;t believe they make money on these becuase no one buys the damned things..!

I don't buy any of the mainstream motoring rags any more.

PPC on subscription, the odd Practical Classics, and even more rarely Retro Cars & Evo. Evo generally gets me depressed at all the amazing cars I can't afford frown

I only read Evo these days, as it has some seriously nice cars in it and I feel that the writers have the same passion for driving that I do. I like their philosophy too - any car can qualify as an "Evo" experience, it depends on who is driving it, how they drive and what they get out of driving in general, whether is a Lamborghini Gallardo, a Mercedes Benz CLK63 AMG, or a 1.1L Renault Clio. Obviously they focus on more powerful / exotic cars for the magazine, but the way the idea of "Evo" can be extended to any vehicle or driver is a good message I think, makes motoring more enjoyable when like me, you cannot afford a proper performance car yet

I used to read Top Gear but I've stopped now, a lot of the stuff they report on doesn't interest me that much, particularly not the short car reviews they do, and the writing style is not of the same quality as that which you get in Evo. The Clarkson, Hammond and May columns are always excellent though.

I do occasionally get surprised by a car I've never seen before though, but it's usually run of the mill stuff. I've never seen this Vauxhall SUV thing, but I saw a Seat Toledo the other day and was genuinely surprised - I've never seen one of those before. It must not have been much of a seller!

Im in the same position. Every year i find myself looking toward even older cars than before. I just dont find new cars that interesting and the niche cars that manufactures make are getting worse and worse. Just look at the current range of BMWs, the X3, 5series GT, the X6 are all hideous and for the majority of people a 3 series can do 99% of what the others can at far less cost. Some of those perculiar Jap cars that are like boxes on wheels that are designed to last until the end of the warrenty by which time they are worth £5, they all look far to similar and have no real defining features.

I struggle with the Kia Ceed, new Astra, Hyundai I- (something?) golf mk6 they look so similar and yet so bland at the same time.

I used to buy Autocar and Auto Express regularly. But as I got more into classics, I lost interest in things like "Peugeot's New Diesel Hatch Concept For 2004 has interesting folding seats".

I kept all the Autocars with MG-Rover features though.

Stopped buying Performance Car years ago when it went out of business (or something). Probably about 1994 or thereabouts...

I saw one just before release, obviously on a press tour thing. It was one of those Father Ted moments - they stetch about the cows being far or near - well same thing with the GT. I made a comment to the chap I was with that it was the new GT but didnt quite realise how far away it was.

hehe

Funny the first time I saw a 5-Series GT, my first thought was 'Dear god, that's hideous', shortly followed by 'I can't believe BMW's have managed to get even uglier since they got rid of Bangle', shortly followed by 'Seriously, who the fk, at any point in the design process, thought that was a good idea. What is the reason for its existence?'

There clearly wasn't enough vulgarity in the world. Chiswick is full of 'em. Happily there's none in Greenwich. Yet.
