right guys i've just spoke to matt at fearnsport about getting my x50 mapped as a few of us were discussing on another chaps post

they will still do the remap at the last groupe buy price £600 plut vat smile

so anyone that was after the groupe buy just give them a call

i said i didnt want to go down the exhaust route again as i had 3 on my last turbo and did not like the noise from any and matt assured me it only makes a small difference unless your going for big big power with other mods and a good remap without will still take it well over 500 bhp @ 1.2/1.3 bar smile

also asked him about uprated diverter valves and he said at the mo they were having trouble finding any that worked well enough so he'll just check my stock ones are still working ok, if not a new set of porsche plastic ones would be better than most alloy aftermarket ones around at the mo

seems like a nice chap and he could have said to me i need an exhaust and d valves upgrade to get more money form me but no very honest and he sounds like he very much knows his stuff

i'm getting it done in 3 weeks time and welcome any discussions on the matter good or bad smile

Exactly what I was saying recently, you dont need uprated diverters, hoses or exhaust. These cars just dont run enough boost, even 'chipped' or tuned. Reading between the lines, several of the aftermarket diverter valve companies, seem to have a quite relaxed attitude to stock control, ie they havnt got any stock control. Diverters are always 'coming in next week' at the outlets that sell them. One thing to check though is the 'F' pipe which the diverters sit on, this can split, especially if the car is chipped, its quite hard rubber but goes very soft when the engines hot, sees the same boost as the intercooler hoses, but hasnt got a layer of webbing or reinforcement like them, and often goes unnoticed when it splits. Absolute bh to change though.

'Well' over 500 bhp without an exhaust? I think an exhaust will see you into that but really dubious if a stock exhaust will.

As for noise, try tubi or europipe or even Milltek.

I can only speak from experience on a 996tt and GT2 on the DV's and in both cases mine knackared after a map. Had good results with forge dv's.

People fit 'zorsts for sound and vanity reasons dont they?. If were being honest. Its the boost pressure by and large that determines engine output. The bosch diverters are/were constantly being updated, ie the later the better, used in loads of vag models. They can easily take high boost, but are usually old and brittle in 996tts due to the heat. I got a couple from VW garage, £thirty something plus vat, cheaper than OPC, same part, but it was my 'F' pipe that had died so replaced that, about 60 notes if i remember right. Would not wish that job on anyone, no room at all. So got pair of spare diverters now if needed.

hi when i say well over 500 he was talking 530 ish at 1.2/1.3 bar and said they run an x50 car with just a map and that's around what it produces

i've tried 3 exhausts including a milltek on my last turbo and the sound just ant for me, it also just makes the car get even more unwanted attention when i'm tyring to pick my nose etc smile

by the sound of what im told 15 bhp is prob all i'd see extrs after an exhaust, unless your running much more power / mods

also is the x50 / gt2 exhaust not a little better flowing anyway as they have one less baffel or something ?

FWIW a Tubi is 26 BHP & 25lb-ft on a 996 Turbo, any variant. This comes as a direct result of decreased backpressure, so less heat & restriction. It will also spool a little quicker.

To drone or not is your only real question and for some unknown reason a Tiptronic drones worse than a manual !

A good ECU programme is usually around 60 BHP & 70 Lb-ft on either variant of 996 so an X50 which is usualy north of 450 anyway once run in etc, as long as its running good fuel.

So 450 + 60 + 26 = 536 which is about the average that we used to see at Weltmeister in years gone by.

So without an exhaust you should see around 510-515 BHP

By fitting an exhaust you may not see alot of top end power , but it will cause less back pressure in the turbos and this will result in less charge air heatand egt's. Air In - Air Out on a turbo engine can make alot of other changes other than overall power , spool up of the turbos is also effected for a start.

Sorry Mark but we'll have to agree to disagree on this.

Upgraded hoses, DV's and an exhaust are very beneficial if you want to maximise your reliability and output.

A remap on its own feels choked without a freer flowing exhaust and as Lee has stated already, lots of people have suffered from the plastic Bosch DV's giving up the ghost.

These cars will run whatever boost is programmed into them... k16's have been known to run 1.5bar on race fuel, and k24's can run 1.2/1.3bar.... thats not a small increase !

^^^^Wot he said, Europipe quote a maximum backpressure of 0.15bar compared to stock of 0.36bar for their stage II exhaust - gotta be only a good thing, especially when you're trying to pump gobfulls of air through. Doesn't sound too shoddy either...

Yes, point taken but I bet most of those bosch DV's were the older types, and the increased boost might have finished them off. Aftermarket DV's aint cheap x2, but if you are keeping the car fit them by all means. Apparently RUF keep the standard diverters, which is interesting. Coming over from the cosworth tuning scene and being older and probably more cynical, I nowdays dont believe anyone when they tell me 'you need x'. Weve all got our own take on this but personally I dont beleive an aftermarket exhaust would make much difference on a chipped stage 1 k24 car, other than to make your wallet lighter. Would certainly sound good though. As for spool up time, these cars are so lag free anyway, I do wonder about the costs involved for a small, if any gain. You are right about one thing, its all about the boost!.

You are probably right about the exhaust. £ for £ it is much less cost effective than the remap. But I'm so glad I got my EP. If I had to choose between map and exhaust I reckon I'd go for the zorst even though it was much more than twice the map. Having said all that I reckon it makes quite a difference to the spool up.

Interesting you mention k16's running 1.5 bar on race fuel. The 997 GT2 holds 1.4 bar on basically the same engine, on super unleaded. Do you think a k24 equipped car could run 1.4 bar safely?. Thats still relatively modest boost by cossie/evo tuning standards.

Not with Std injectors, they will not have enough fuel. there is about 17bhp for every .1bar from 1.2 - 1.4. At 1.4 there will not be enough fuel, the turbos will run too hot also.

Better to add a bigger wheel on the K24, and reduce the boost for more power.

You can't really compare the boost levels with the 997GT2 as its running totally different turbos.

You also can't compare the Porsche engine & boost levels to Cossie engines... single turbo v twin turbo, different comp ratios' etc... meaningless comparison.

You'd be a convert in the benefits of an exhaust if you had a go in mine & compared it to an X50 without ;o)

Its good to be cynical I agree, but only to a point. A lot of guys here have a lot of experience with tuning & testing these cars to different stages, and speaking for myself, I'm not guessing when I say what the benefits are with certain components.

I agree that the likes of Ruf and Manthey don't change DV's or even boost hoses... but then they don't change intercoolers either until you get to mega power levels, but no one is gonna convince me that de facto the stock i/c's are best for this application or can't be improved on.

Your havin' a laugh right!!!

Trust me, the stock exhaust is very restrictive if you have a remap on your car, which means you will not be gaining the full benefit of the remap.

I would never doubt the great ones view (Matt) smile but do a search for my thread on tuning and read how giving the exhaust an after thought pretty much negated my few K's worth of mods.

Until someone rigs up a thermocouple inside the cold side of the cooler its hard to say really. Certainly the manufacturers of the aftermarket coolers will tell you they are better but they would wouldnt they?, especially with a slice of porsche tax. The biggest advantage of the welded alloy ones is that the end caps arent plastic and are leak proof.

The x50, gt2, turbo S coolers are slightly bigger arent they?. Clever marketing or engineering improvement?. 8 odd grand was money for old rope for slightly bigger turbos and coolers, although second hand makes a good bargain for anyone in the market now.
