Hi. I am a newbie about to buy (in the next week or two) a black '06 RR 4.2 S/C and I have a pricing question which, if it is not inappropriate, I'd like to try and get some input from the collective wisdom of you all here.

I have seen several cars up for sale that fit my bill with independents and main dealers and am about to start the visiting process once I have lined up a few appointments/test drives. Obviously, the indies tend to be a bit cheaper up front but my preference is to try and buy from a main dealer to get the benefit of the official approved used warranty and likely better pre-sale prep.

My question is what do you think the % room for manoevre is on price with a main dealer (and given August trading month, if that is at all relevant)?
eg if a car is up at £30k, I know there will be a minimum the dealer has in the car to make his margin and assume he has taken in trade in the low to mid 20s. But am I being realistic/unrealistic in trying to pay £27k max? Am I being too cheeky or too wet? A couple with the main dealers appear to have been up for a while which tempts me to put in an offer and worst he can say is no.

Parkers appears to show 06 franchised dealer cars at 27k, 29k or 30k depending on whether 55,06 or 56 plate. I recognise some cars/colour combos may be in more demand than others and the dealers will know which those are and price accordingly which I assume will also be a factor.

Any help gratefully received!

Can't help you with dealer margins but I can tell you that a guy that works with me just paid £29k for a 55 plate s/c from an Indie with 12 months warranty.

I got £750 off mine when I bought it 18 months ago.

Bought one 3 months ago from a LR main dealer, they appear to have had the car a while, it was a p/ex against a new one, original price on screen when I went to view was £31k, advertised on LR site at £29k and I was able to buy at £28k.

Took a while to find the car I wanted, prices varied a lot, this was the cheapest on the LR site at the time, but was also the lowest mileage. (Terrible colour, but everything else was EXACTLY what I wanted and the price seemed ok with the full LR warranty.)

Bought my 06 s/c from a main delaer last August and got £1k off sticker plus a free rear load liner, set of rubber mats (f&r), and a full tank of juice.

Hope you get sorted smile

about £1000-1500 seems to be the right area for a good negotiation from a main dealer.

If it's a perfect spec, good mileage and great condition with all the right history then pay what you can afford.... an extra £1000 doesn't really factor in the overall scheme of things really.
