Alfa 3.0 V6 nut running too well

Tonight my 166 3.0 has developed a problem, there is nothing until 3000 rpm. I could put my foot flat to the floor and the acceleration was none existent. But when the revs eventually get to 3000 ish all's good. My first thought was the MAF but from just reading up on it it seems it would be the opposite problem.
Anybody any ideas?

Unplug the MAF and take it for a drive. It should idle badly but run smoothly with the MAF disconnected.

check your air intake pipes - I swapped the filter out on mine the other evening because it felt a bit sluggish when pulling away and found the flexi section was cracked quite badly in the folds. A temporary repair with tape and the car is back to normal
