I'm after some opinions on how this sounds please....
Bear in mind that this is an up close recording.

Just replaced fan belt & air con belt along with idler pulley, tensioner pulley & air con tensioner pulley.

This was one noisy culprit,

well id say theres a noisy vanos unit for starters
but thats not really an issue these days - as the noise isnt indicative of failure and if it pisses you off too much it can be replaced for £350 odd for one rebuilt and uprated.

yours sounds noisier than average - but its a vid so could be misleading

we really need a new vid of it now youve resolved the other issues mentioned (pulleys, belts, tensioners etc)

sounds diesel ish to me - and thats what happens with a noisy vanos.
its not too bad, a touch louder than average but ive certainly heard worse (and as i said its not really a problem as it doesnt mean its failed or that its going to)

A failed VANOS will usually manifest itself by way of the infamous 'marbles in a tin can' noise, which is notable by its absence in the above video. Hence my comment.

The 'diesel' noise you mention is most likely to be the injectors in my experience.

you use the word "failed"
but its now common knowledge that a noisy vanos does NOT mean the unit has failed or that its likely too.

Jesus... rolleyes

You're quite right, but it is common knowledge that the VANOS actuators can and do fail, albeit they wouldn't be attributable to the noise as such.

spot on (and i never said otherwise) the solenoids cand and do fail
the main issue is usually the seals, which harden and crack and then leak

what i was referring to though is that the noise of the units has nothing to do with any failures.
