Cheapest/Best time to buy MX5?
Discussion
My plan was to pick up an MX5 for the summer, but due to Insurance it never really happened and it's getting a bit too late now.. But I still want one.
So i'm thinking, do the prices change much after the summer? Could I pick up a cheap MX5 in Autumn/Winter when some people might want rid of them, then keep it around until the summer..

In my experience the reality is that prices don't change with the seasons. It's probably just dealer talk used during haggling to get a better price. Fall for it if you wish to...
As mentioned above, just buy a good one when you find it.
Its just even when I was looking at the start of the summer, there were 2004 Euphonic MX5's going for about £4000.. Then when we got the good weather, these prices all seemed to jump to around £6000. I was thinking the opposite might happen come Christmas. As mentioned above, just buy a good one when you find it.
I'd love a good UK 1.8 Mk1..
The price of all small cheap 2nd hand cars has gone up. It's a symptom of the financial climate, people can't afford expensive cars so they all want cheap 2nd hand cars. Supply & demand means that cheap cars become more expensive. Try finding a Fiesta at a decent price and you'll see what I mean!

I've been keeping a general eye on 5 prices and sales over the last month or so as I'm considering buying in the not too distant future. 5 prices seem to vary wildly anyway but they did seem to go up slightly in the July and seem to be lowering a bit now. I know when I had my Vx220 prices varied a few hundred quid between seasons.
There is simply less demands for convertibles in the winter, if someone wants rid in the winter then they'll probably have to lower their price for a quick sale. Don't expect massive dfferences though...

I think the way to look at this is through the seller's eyes. If you had an MX5, would you sell it for £2K less because it's winter? Or (if that's the difference) would you simply wait a few months..?
The other thing to consider is you'll probably get much more choice in summer as that seems to be a sensible time to sell a soft top.

They were that low?!There are generally a lot of MX-5s on the market compared to some other cars, some are over-priced, some are under-priced, just as some are good cars and some are dogs.
I agree with others that seasonality is less of a factor than the general variance between sellers, but there probably is a few hundred quid in it between the depths of winter and the height of summer for the same car, simply because sellers know that not many people look for convertibles in December and they're in a weaker position come negotiating time if they want rid of it.
February/March this year was a good time to pick one up as most people were still thawing out from the pretty extreme winter we just had, but there was still a big difference for similar cars between sellers even then.
What you ideally want is to find a general second hand car salesman who has taken in a special edition MX-5 as a trade in, knows nothing about it and is pricing it the same as a normal MX-5, that is where the real bargains are.

I just went looking for one of these threads to see if anyone would be up for selling me their MX5.. I did not realise I've been after one since August..
So, yea, If you have a Pre 90bhp 1.6 UK MX5 for sale.. In Blue. Then let me know..
I've been looking nearly every day, and it's been hard to try and find the right one.

They were that low?!Seasonal changes in price are b
ks. Some people do take the piss with their asking prices at the height of summer, but come November they find their cars are still for sale, while reasonably priced ones are gone within days. Paddy_N_Murphy said:
