BMW Hybrid Sports Car Set For 2013

Hybrid sports car plans underway, says German mag - and there will be an M version

Visual cues will come from...
Visual cues will come from...
Eco-friendly sports cars are truly all the rage at the moment with Audi, Mercedes, Porsche and Lexus all planning electric or hybrid sports cars.

Now BMW is jumping on the eco bandwagon - at least according to German car mag Auto Bild.

The German journos reckon that BMW is currently hard at work on a production version of the dramatic Vision Efficient Dynamics concept coupe that it revealed at the 2009 Frankfurt show - and that a hot M version is also waiting in the wings.

The regular car will be called the i100 and is due to hit showrooms in 2013.

... this stunning concept
... this stunning concept
The i100 will be a plug-in hybrid and will use a three-pot direct-injection turbodiesel - essentially half a 335d motor - with 165 to 185hp. That will be supplemented by a pair of electric motors generating 100hp between them.

The rumoured M version, says Auto Bild, will use a straight six from the next generation M3, coupled to a super capacitor to give it a clean, green power boost. Now that's the sort of eco sports car we can imagine having some serious fun with with...

The next M3 will have a straight six? with a turbo im guessing.

Oh dear that is sad, the M5 I can understand but leave the M3 N/A for the love of all things holly!

This i100 sounds cool tho.

Seems that way. The Auto Bild article is the first i've heard of it, but it does fit with what Bee-Em is doing elsewhere...

its like a capacitor but it holds a higher charge?

its what BMW used in their F1 KERS system I think, though they have just used a battery instead.

Yeah I guess it was always going to happen I'm just making a fuss, just hope the engine is unique to the M cars and not just a range motor with the wick turned up. Would kind of ruin the magic a bit in my mind.

Its a prototype flux capacitor.

Just what I was thinking, difference between a capacitor and a battery is a capacitor can discharge all its volts/amps in an instance whereas a battery is more prolonged and steady discharge. Sure ill be corrected if I am wrong though!

have you ever seen a capacitor explode? wouldn't love to see a super capacitor explode!

I hope it doesn't look like that - it's the fugliest thing I've ever seen.

Good to see companies coming up with good strategies for lowering emissions/fuel use, though, unlike others (I'm looking at you, Aston Martin).

Yeah that's right mate, and also it can store the energy alot quicker, faster than most battery technology.

The thing is about Capacitors is they are very expensive, even compared to batteries, well atleast they were a couple of years ago. BMW obviously know what they are doing though and its an interesting take on hybrid vehicles.

Don't worry, it won't explode.

It will super explode.

It'll be an Ultra-capacitor, energy density in a supercap won't be high enough.

But as martync says wouldn't want to be around if it shorts at full charge (i.e. accident)

Hmm, I'm not sure I'd want to be in the same county as that thing if it was involved in an accident. I've seen a capacitor the side of my little finger blow a hole in a wall... I dread to think what this could do.
