Field Engineering, R.E. working 'out there'.

Hi all - in part thanks to some great advice on here I currently have an application in with the RAF to join in an engineering capacity.
However this is far from a certainty and I am still looking to move regardless of what happens there.
I need to free myself from a desk, and get my hands dirty. I'm a very practical person, currently trained and working as a design engineer, but a 9-5 sat driving a CAD station is not for me. I dont care where the job is, I dont care what hours it is. Even working from home on a 'on call' basis would be brill (as in, pack your bags your off to XXX tomorrow for 2 weeks they have a technical problem).
I have an application in with an electricity distribution company as a trainee field engineer. I also have made contact with a friend of a friend who is a commissioning engineer for Siemens gas turbines, he is putting my name forward too.
What kind of companies employ people in 'field' type roles? Anything mechanical, things that need installing, setting up, maintaining and running?
So far I'm thinking of power distribtion (electricity, gas), power generation (like gas turbines).
Theres also the oil+gas drilling side of things, (hard to get into apparently, I've enquired before!).
Theres also the civilian companies that supply/work with the military?
Who else?
