hi all,
Quick Question for you all .... would you take a 12 year old (boy) to New York for a long weekend.
We were all talking about taking a long weekend and doing something different than the usual camping / sun holiday and he said that he'd like to go there.
Initially i dismissed it, thinking we'd only go there for a shopping day - but now I think about it - maybe it would be a good experience for him (and us).
would appreciate your thoughts and suggestions, and and recommendations on where to stay !
cheers

Get a New York Pass and do lots of it for free.

1) Empire State Building
2) Cruise around the southern tip of Manhattan on the (free) Staten Island ferry. Apparently the best views of downtown NY.
3) Helicopter flight (c.$200 each)
4) Statue of Liberty (think you have to book this in advance)
5) USS Intrepid
6) NBC Studio tour
7) Hang around TKTS at Times Square and see if you can get free tickets for David Letterman?!

Top of the Rock
A city bus tour you can see parts of the city you wouldn't necessarily choose to visit on your own.
Ground Zero the deli by it that used to serve the workers and rescue services add in the church behind that acted as an aid station.

If it's just the two of you going, it might be fun / educational to find a hostel to stay in, you meet more interesting people, it's cheaper, and it'll introduce him to the concept of travelling.

We've staying in the Swiss Hostel, it might go by the name of Suisse Hostel, which I would have thought would have been fine, and it's only a few blocks from Times Square...

I've been the last 4 years, never get bored!

1) Empire State Building
2) Statue of Liberty
3) Top of the Rockefeller centre at night (in my opinion better than the empire)
4) baseball game at Yankee stadium / Citi Ground (book in advance)
5)Madason Square Garden (NBA/NHL) Sports depend on the time of year you go!
6)Ice SKating in the Rockefeller or Central park
7)Times Square (movie in Imax there)
8)Great Restaurants (try little Itlay, Soho, Noho)
9) Would reommend a bus tour as you get to see the sights and the whole of NYC!
