Got stopped on the way home from work today and the Police (traffic) wanted to give my car a look over. Was more than happy to comply and let them do so.

After checking everything they got to my Passenger front Tyre and told me it was below the legal limit on the inside by .4mm .

The rest of the tread well more than 3/4 across was fine.

They started to write out a 3 point and £60 fine form thing when i told them i hadnt been driving for two years yet and have 3 points on my license already from speeding wink, which they then gave me a bking about aswell and told me thats why my tyre was , in their own words , in such a bad way. They wouldnt listen to me when i told them it was because the tracking was out and that was the reason it was the way it was. So instead they are sending this to court to let them decide. Which could leave me no license frown Which in turn would leave me with no Job, even more frown

What do you think ?

This won't end well for you on here I'm afraid.

I think you should have spent some of the money you p155ed away on the nonsense stuff quoted above replacing your tyres before they endangered everyone around you, me included.

You'll have to suck it up and get the bus until you've served your ban and retaken your test. Assuming you can afford £2,000 a year for insurance when you get your licence back.

What tread depth were they when you checked them before starting the journey.

Being kind, what tread depth were they when you noticed the tracking issue, and had it fixed?

Sadly i never pissed any money away on a bonnet, car was bought like that and a bit of vital info is the tyres are less than 1500 miles old.

its just the fact the tracking is off ever so slightly and the very inside is getting it tight, but never realised it was below the limit.

But still surely i could be given a form thing that means you get it changed and then stamped by a garage to say its legal.
just think its petty , especially to lose a license for.

The depth was 1.2 when they checked it, when i checked it last week it was 3 all the way across, but the rest of the tyre was 2, have been looking for a space to get it booked into for a week or so now but sadly the boy is very busy but he is really good therefor ive been waiting on him.

So you still have 6mm of tread on the outside of the tyre, given they're less than 1500 miles old?

Probably harsh, but it's our responsibility to maintain the car. If the tyres are illegal then you're bang to rights. They're either legal or not!

This is very simple.

Either the tyres is legal, or it isn't.

If it isn't then you'll lose your licence and have to retake your test. End of story. Plus you'll never get insurance again without paying £2k a year!

If it is legal, then you're fine.

Which is it?

What are these tyres made of, chocolate? I've done 4000 miles in my R32 since I got it. They tread was 5mm when I got it and they're still 5mm now!!

Hi,

can you post a photo of the offending tyre showing the area of tread that is allegedly defective?

I have known many to make a mistake, including police officers, as the outside shoulder of the tyre, as long as it falls within the outside 1/8th of the tyre width can be totally devoid of tread ie smooth.

I have had garages recently again wrongly report on car tyres at service that the outside 1/8th is too low being under 1.6mm

How on earth have you managed to go from 9mm to 1.2mm in 1500 miles?

And how fooked is your car that across the rest of the tyre, tread depth is 3-4mm

What tyres are they?

(I only get ~5k miles out of the front pair on my Focus ST but that's a lot better than 1500 for a 1.6)!

You're talking nonsense.

The tyres are less than 1500 miles old, and they have 3mm of tread left?

Also, if you're saying the tyre has more than 1.6mm of tread over more than 3/4 of the width, it's not illegal, so you should have nothing to worry about.

So what are you not telling us?
This is just whats happened , i dont particularly know what the limits are but this is what they have told me and this is what im getting done for.

Be honest, mabye just me being irresponsible but i am a quick driver so the tyres have taken a huge beating, not the best tyres in the world either, rather soft.

But i do have to ask is it really a decent reason to have them ban me, i didnt recieve any paperwork but i did sign the book. is it possibly a scare tactic ?

OK, so court in session

1. Bald tyres
2. Modded Focus with loads of expensive kit on it but not enough sense to replace defective tyres
3. "I am a quick driver" and "the tyres have taken a huge beating"
4. 3 points in the first two years plus this

Mate, sounds to me like you're better off on the bus.

the track rod had been bent due to a small ding , and to get it to get fixed i had to drive it a bit of a distance, due to the accident is why i need the tracking re done

...still doesn't explain how the tyres went from new (8mm) to 3mm in less than 1500 miles.
