Budget cuts in Jails - could be a great idea.
Discussion
Just been on the evening news and could allegedly be down to budget cuts. Perhaps the offender should be roomed up with huntley as punishment.

Seeing as they mostly got 2 yrs, they will be back on the streets in 6 months. For abducting/kidnapping, drugging and shagging a kid, and selling her to other men.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-10...

What a sad picture of Britain in 2010 that story paints.

Be careful; in some states here (not most thankfully), that causes overcrowding and the subsequent early release of "less violent" criminals to move freely amongst all of you saving money.
We don't less the less violent ones out early, it is not safe for them on the mean streets of the UK.That may not be true.

Last time i remember hearing of the costs of a prison place in the UK was near £40k, probably more now.
Some southern state US (ie not federal) prisons manage to do the same thing for $5-6000 a year, and presumably are signed up to the same human rights spiel as us.
Our main state prison is along those lines. The inmates work the fields to grow food. The prison is nearly 80% self sufficient. The prison even makes some profit from their efforts. Some of the money is put aside in inmate accounts for their release. Some southern state US (ie not federal) prisons manage to do the same thing for $5-6000 a year, and presumably are signed up to the same human rights spiel as us.
Other than being a complete nut case and more trouble than he's worth, Sheriff Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona certainly knows how to save money and run a jail. The prisoners hate the Motherfvcker and you gotta love him for that.

Maricopa County Jail Modification
(Maricopa County tent jail)
Prior to the election of Sheriff Joe Arpaio in 1993, the prisoner population in Maricopa County Jail, Arizona, the 4th largest jail system in the world[24], exceeded the maximum number of inmates allowed in its facilities. Prisoners were routinely released from custody prior to completing their sentence due to the overcrowding. In a study conducted in 1993 it was estimated that construction of a new facility would cost approximately $70,000,000.[citation needed] Sheriff Arpaio, concerned about the cost of a new facility and reasoning that military tents were good enough for the men and women of the U.S. armed forces who fought in Operation Desert Storm, ordered that a Tent Jail be constructed utilizing inmate labor [25]. It consisted of Korean War era tents donated by the United States armed forces, and a 50 ft (15.4 m) observation tower with a vacancy sign mounted on the front. The final cost of the project was approximately $100,000 and it is capable of housing over 2400 Inmates.
All inmates housed outside in the open tents (N yard for males and O yard for females) are "volunteers" in the "Working Inmate Program" and must agree to work an assigned job and comply with the Sheriff's grooming standards. Inmates who decline to work or refuse to groom themselves are relocated inside a hardened facility along with the rest of the jail population.[citation needed]

If they're in jail they're there to be PUNISHED!!! Remove all the tvs all the pingpong tables and make them work to pay for their food. No work no food, simple! They should be worked so hard that they have only one interest i.e. food and sleep with perhaps 1 day off a week. And if they misbehave in prison then bread and water and into the black hole for a week....
After they've finished their FULL sentence then they can have a rest....
The old military prisons in Shepton Mallet and Colchester didn't have too many people revisiting.... or if they did they were incorrigible so needed to be locked away for good.... prison of "the Hill" type would sort these scum out..
Had to escort a prisoner to Shepton Mallet in the early 60s, scared the bejeesus out of me......
