Haven't flown for a while..

I'm off to Chicago on Monday with Virgin Atlantic and this is the first time I've flown a 'proper' airline in about 15 years. Usually more of an easy jet kinda guy.

What can I expect? I understand that food and drink are free, does this include booze? If it doesn't, how much is a beer/g&t likely to set me back?

Are there any tricks/advice on best places to chose to sit? (I think I can check in online and choose a seat 24h before departure? Or have I got that one wrong?)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
