I am taking a friend camping (in a tent) to Cornwall on August bank holiday weekend, she A) wants to see Cornwall and B) wants to go camping so rolled into one we ended up with this.

A) Am I mad attempting to go on holiday this weekend?

B) I am after recommendations of places to stay, I have been to Cornwall plenty of times in a tin shed with my family when I was a lot younger (8 years ago or so now!) and really enjoyed it.

We aren't really after a clubbing and night life sort of place despite being in that age bracket, after a nice relaxing weekend (not too many screaming children) something that is fairly close to some nice places to visit or go for a walk.

Things that the camp site must have/be:

  • Showers and toilets
  • Pretty close to the sea (walking distance is preferable or a bit of driving with a secure car park not located right next to the sea + sea air)
  • Ability to park the car right next to the tent - I don't want to have to park the car in a car park miles away and have the risk of it getting scratch/dented and I don't want to have to carry things miles.
That is pretty much it, we don't really need a pool or a bar which I am hoping with place the camp site more away from the young children and drunken idiots crowd.

Suggestions would be appreciated!

Bank holiday weekend could be very busy! Unless you're both teachers, I'd leave it until september as there will be less people around (certainly less kids), the weather will still be good and it will be cheaper also.
I can't vouch for any particular campsites in Cornwall myself, but I cannot rate highly enough the information I've gained from the Cool Camping books by Jonathon Knight. Pick up the England book and you will not be disappointed by his recommendations. I've used them for tours of Wales & Scotland and odd weekends in England and have not had a bad experience at all. All of his selections are based on personal visits and always in lovely locations with good amenities (showers/toilets etc) and give information on local pubs that do good food etc.
Hope you have a good trip.

Here's a few from my neck of the woods (south east cornwall - Looe/Polperro/Fowey)

Don't think any of them are within walking distance of the beach, but most are only a very short drive away. Plenty to do if the weather is crap, Eden project, various National Trust houses, Gardens of Helligan etc...plenty of decent resturants & pubs in the local area.

If you enjoy walking the south west coast path is awesome.

hello neighbour!

As said it could be very busy! It is worth booking in advance and it should be noted that a lot of popular campsites have a minimum stay of 1 week in the main holiday period!

I stayed at this site a few weeks ago and it was pretty good! nice simple clean facilites! 15 minute stroll to St Just (lots of pubs etc) and close to Cape Cornwall and Sennan Cove.

Have stayed at Trenant Steading campsite, nr New Polzeath (more commonly known as Robbie Love’s Campsite).

It was fairly basic, 10 min walk to Polzeath beach, and full of Hooray Henry's almost exclusively off their faces on drink and drugs.

Probably NOT what you want, so I'd avoid if I was you. Sorry I can't be more help, but at least you one to cross OFF your list.
