San Diego Hotel

Can anyone recommend a hotel in San Diego? We will be flying to LAX on September 17th, landing at around 14:00 and picking up our Nissan XTerra or similar (don't even dare try and give me a Hyundai Santa Fe).
We'll then be heading straight down to San Diego. We'll be pretty knackered by the time we get there, so we are looking for a nice, quiet, relaxing hotel for one or two nights. Hopefully for no more than £100 a night if possible.
Also any tips on any must-see's in and around San Diego? Any restaurant recommendations?

We stayed in the Sofia hotel, which was pretty cheap (I think) and an ideal central location.
The public transport is really really good, and very cheap. I believe we bought a "one day travel card" for under $10 which allowed use of the buses, trams and trains, which was great vfm.
We only had a day or so there, so went to the zoo in the am, they got the bus/train to Old Town San Diego for lunch / beer, and then to Sea World for the afternoon evening.
Make sure you walk down the harbour to see USS Midtown, as its pretty cool, as well as driving over the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge (Highway 75).

The Sofia looks nice, and only £120 for the one night.
I quite like the idea of going to the Zoo, but I'm not sure what animals we'd see there that we hadn't already seen at Chester Zoo. That probably sounds really ignorant.
Definitely going to see USS Midtown too, and will take in the bridge.

Palm Springs. Can you remember which route you took? And did you stay over there? Which hotel?To be honest, our itinerary is pretty loose at the moment and something we need to pin down.
Basically, we'll be doing: LAX - San Diego - Vegas - Yosemite - San Francisco - LAX. Hopefully this weekend we can draw up a proper plan of where we want to stop off along the way.
I believe we took the I15 North to Temecula, and then joined the 79 East towards Aguanga.
Then the 371 North / North East, until it meets the 74.
Then we followed the 74 to Mountain Center, and then on to the 243 through Mt San Jacinto State Widerness, through to Banning. (If you like shopping, there is a HUGE Outlet Mall in Cabazon, which is next to Banning)
This route;
From Banning jump on the I10 to Palm Springs.
A slight teaser for you, the road snakes down and around a mountain;
For the hotel, we just picked up a touristy mag from Dennys at breakfast, and found a place that did rooms for $30 or so a night, and ended up in the Palm Court Inn, which is on 1983 North Palm Canyon Drive. Cool pool, and great views.
Here's the pool;

That route is 160 miles and the roads look superb. Hopefully we'll stay in San Diego 1 or 2 nights, take that route to Palm Springs early one morning (via the Outlet Mall no doubt!).
We'll need another stop on the way to Vegas, as that's 260 miles from Palm Springs. Maybe somewhere in the Mojave, like Baker.
RE the outlet mall, my other half and found it, planned to go there before we had even booked the hotels, as there is a Dior store there.
I went on to the Grand Canyon from Palm Springs, so I can't help you with places to stop, but when you leave Palm Springs, go via the Joshua Tree National Park from the I10 to the 62 (@Twentynine Palms)
Amboy is worth a drive past too, which is on the way to the I40 from the 62.
If you need any other advice on roads / places - we went from SF to San Diego to the Grand Canyon and the back to SF over almost 4 weeks.
I went on to the Grand Canyon from Palm Springs, so I can't help you with places to stop, but when you leave Palm Springs, go via the Joshua Tree National Park from the I10 to the 62 (@Twentynine Palms)
Amboy is worth a drive past too, which is on the way to the I40 from the 62.

I went East at Amboy, so missed Bagdad (lol), but if you have Sky tv, you might recognise something.
Amboy is somewhere in this valley;
Kingman seemed ok to me, but we didn't stop long, but Historic Route 66 is there, and might be worth a look.
The 93 from Kingman to Vegas, over the Hoover Dam is a must, but its 100 odd miles long, with 3 or 4 curves, which is just weird.

That looks fantastic! Mrs Arese is Pescatarian, but they seem to have a good tuna selection.We stayed here, view across the Marina was excellent
