How many sick days is too many?
Discussion
There is no stipultion on how many days is too many, hence companies using tools such as Bradford Factor or implementing a policy. 6 days so far this year with all of them being Mondays would be a conduct issue and the company can push this down a disciplinary procedure. Perhaps the individual has failed to follow on all occasions the reporting procedure. Long-term absence may become a capability issue. Ultimately the requirements for managing either towarda an exit or disciplinary are practically identical.

A freind of mine has had maybe 6 sick days so far this year, all for legit reasons, and is being given hassle by management at their job about it.
What is the law and code of practice surrounding this?
Thanks for your help.
The law doesn't say too much about this. Some companies only pay Statuary Sick Pay, which only kicks in after three days of continuous illness. What is the law and code of practice surrounding this?

Was it one episode of 6 days, or was it 6 separate occasions?
If it was 6 separate occasions, then your mate must have some serious health issues if they were all "legit".
Another thing that employers might look at is which day of the week your mate is most susceptible to illness. In other words, is he more likely to be sick on a Monday than a Wednesday.

Well these are the cases.
Kidney infection 2
Funeral 1
Injuries from a bike crash 1
Flu 2
Odd, why was the Funeral taken as Sick.Kidney infection 2
Funeral 1
Injuries from a bike crash 1
Flu 2
My company policy is 3 separate occasion in a 12 month period, a 4th in that period and you have to have a meeting with HR and your Manager.
As for Flu, I take it you mean a "Cold" as I had flu 5 years ago and was bed ridden for 5 days and knackered for another 5.
And as said if these are all Monday Fridays, then that might be why there not happy, However I would have thought the most they will do is a verbal warning, which doesn’t really mean anything in the long run.
Well, he has 96 points on the Bradford scale. Many companies will want a chat at this point.
The funeral shouldn't have been taken as a sick day. Depending on the relationship with the desceased, some companies would have given a half or full day off with pay. Many would allow him to use some of his holiday entitlement.
He shouldn't be getting "hassle" as such, but I am not surprised that his bosses are a bit unhappy.

Well it appears that its just been mentioned a couple of times, I don't think anything will come of it, but I personally think they should give it a rest, I was wrong about the funeral, it was an extra day for the kidney infection, so they're all legit reasons and said person works very hard.

according to...........?1 day is too many. The employee should either have savings to cover any time off work or alternatively take out an insurance policy to cover against time off for ill-health. Otherwise the cost of the lost time is put on the products/services that the company makes/provides. At the very least, the first day out of the first 3 shouldn't be paid and then the first 2 days out of 6 etc.

I will disagree to a degree. It's all down to company policy. If the company covers for your sick days, then more than likely it comes out your wages (over the whole workforce) anyway. It's all relative. Silver993tt said:

...or, the company values its employees and one of the benefits it costs for is paying wages which its employees are sick.Without employees most companies would cease to exist, after all. It's a two way relationship.
