Some cars sound better loud, some don't. What is the right sound and how loud is too loud.

Old car, v8, bodged exhaust. Sounds all right some times but not right. Same car straight through new system (with X pipe) sounds good but loud. Sounded great at 1500-2000 rpm on light throttle. Set car alarms off to when driving by. But that initial pulling away sounded too loud, going through enclosed spaces far too loud.

Db meter showed 125 Db, painfully loud but i didn't want to loose the deep burble of the v8. So i fitted some bike silencers as end cans. Deep burble still there slight loss in power ( some back pressure) but sounds nice, even though it still 118 Db.

I know that 118 Db is almost half the loudness of 125 Db, but is that still considered too loud. I never got stopped with the old exhaust even though it made people jump when it started. Is there a limit or wrong type of sound.

depends on the car imo - if it's a Barry Boy hatch back then no it doesnt sound good. If it's a classic car / american car or ANY TVR ( wink ) then loud is fine!

This is an important point. What car is it?

My 4.5 Cerbera was properly loud. That comment in the context of my previous ownership of Caterhams too (plural).

It sounded fantastic... evil even, but was a proper pain over longer distances, and although I generally received favourable expressions from people I passed, I was very conscious of it as I went up and down my road.

It definitely **does** depend on the car. If you talk the talk, you need to be able to walk the walk.

My Mustang tested at about 125db with the old exhaust system - it was indeed, loud.

I now have cutout valves which mean I have the option of 95db or ermm.... deafness smile

My Impreza is quite loud. Tends to live a weekend, garaged life though so it only annoys people who think I'm speeding if I burble past at 27 in a 30.

As said above - if its the right, it can never be too loud.

...I remember the days spent driving around setting off car alarms without so much as a down shift cloud9

to loud is when you drive the car and go "thats a bit to loud" or some one in the car goes "excuse me can i borrow a tissue, my ears are bleading"

It's a logarithmic scale. half the loudness of 125dB is 122dB so a drop to 118dB is actually reducing it to less than a quarter of it's loudness! ears

The prick with the dustbin for a tailpipe on his Impreza that lives in my village and insists on accelerating flat out through a 40mph limit every day........That's too loud.

There's a guy like that round here too (no, it's not me). Can hear him very clearly caning it down the 40 road outside, usually at 6am. Car looks a bit tired too.

This car sounds fking ace. Better than any Ferrari or other Italian exotica I have ever heard.

Just had a quote to put straight throughs on the Bentley, with a pair of over long up swept raked cut off cam tail twin exits, Espada style, for £1500. Very, very wrong, but I ain't got £1500 to spunk at the moment biggrin

Just been thinking how utterly, utterly splendid your car would sound with that exhaust and the engine you were talking about the other day...

...gosh, need to go have a lie down! hehe

Over 98dB is too loud no exceptions, noise doesn't have to be loud to sound good.

+1. The millteks on some 'quicker' wink Volvos are about 89dB, which is on the 'loud but good' side of this argument.

Someone on the forums has something that's about 99dB and it's stupidly loud on videos, others have said it's silly in real life and way way too loud generally.

Exceptions can be made for something Italian that is a V12 though wink
