Feel like a bit of a fraud posting on this bit... unlikely to ever be a Ferrari owner unless I pick the right numbers of Euromillions...

Just curious though.... people always used to talk of multiple year waitings lists for Ferrari's and I just wondered what the lists were like after the recession... the likes of Ferrari would no doubt have cut production numbers as they were selling fewer cars, but how much have the waiting times reduced...I mean, I am assuming you could not arrive at Maranello in Egham (my nearest dealer) and say.. can I have a 458 and them say, certainly, it will be here next friday!

Last I heard, next build slots for the 458 are 2012.

they always initially quote two years regardless : long enough to appear "exclusive", not so long that you'll go elsewhere biggrin

I guess it depends if you want to order one to your exact spec and colour. All cars have a waiting list to en extent.

Also heard Monte saying that they were going to ramp up production to cut down these waiting lists.

2 years is not so long that I'd go elsewhere???!

You're obviously a far more patient man than I! I'm likely to have changed my mind about what I wanted in 2 months time let alone 2 years... The only way i'd wait that long would be on pre-order for a new model.

2 years of seeing the car I was waiting for being driven about on the roads, reviewed on motoring programmes and in magazines etc. would drive me up the wall.

If for example I was in the fortunate position to be able to buy a new 458 i'm pretty sure my money wouldn't be going down on one. I'd buy a lightly used F430 Scuderia for about £130k, a Nissan GTR for day to day use and be more than happy driving round in them for a year or so until I fancied a change and then I might consider swapping the 430 for a used 458. No waiting list and dodging some of the depreciation / speculator premiums.

I would guess that the average new Ferrari buyer puts his order in on a rolling basis.

Agree. I used to work for a fella that ordered two of everything - one for himself, one to sell on.

As for the GTR/F430 combo, I would also say that many of the 458 customers would have more than one car and the 458 is an addition rather than a replacement. I.e. they wouldnt buy the F430 and GTR in stead of a 458 as they already have or have had a F430 and want the latest and greatest offering to add to their stable.

Which is perhaps not overly reflective of the general state of affairs, given that its a brand new model at the start of production. Not sure what the lists are for the Cali, but I was hearing people getting to spec cars fro 6mth delivery. Not sure on 599.

By comparison, I went to Audi the other day and the waiting list on a Q5 is 7-8mths too!

Some cars I've enquired about recently;

Ferrari California: 9-12 months
Ferrari 458 Italia: 2-2.5 years
Maserati Grancabrio: 6-9 months

I think the longest I could ever wait for a car would be 6 months; my current one took 5.5 months and that was getting to the limit although I'm delighted with it. But then again with a Ferrari it's a bit more special so perhaps you can, also let's not forget the £20,000 you'll have down as a deposit on it...

I guess if one is really after a new 458 the smart money is to put a deposit down for a 458 Italia Spider as presumably that's about 2 years away and hope to get one of the first.

laugh

Yeah, I think quite a few people might have already thought of that. I'd reckon there is already a 2yr post-production waiting list for the spider.

Won't work because all the early 458spiders will go to the buyers of the early 458s (other than the people who sold theirs on to Hartley and Romans)

You cant realistically expect Ferrari to sell their "latest" car to a new customer before giving it to a customer who has consistently bought cars from them in the past.

Don't think I don't know this; from the release date of a 458 Italia coupe to one getting one now is going to be near 3 years now for a new customer.

The release date of the 458 Italia Spider let's speculate is summer 2012, so therefore you might get one within a year of it's release; which means you'll see significantly fewer of them driving around before you are holding the wheel of your own.

I know a new customer can't come straight in with a new order at the front of the queue; maybe buying one off the forecourt for a premium though...

If you got one of the latest Ferraris wouldn't this cause you to spend all weekend around London trying to take photos of yourself causing a paradox resulting in a rip in the space time continuum and the destruction of all mankind!!!

No, you're still missing the point. The waiting list of the Spider doesnt include the time until release, its time FROM release. And it reflects the fact that there is a rolling list of people who would be ahead of you in any list regardless of when you express interest. Existing customers will always get preferential treatment. This is why its not uncommon to hear of people buying a differet ferrari they dont want, just so that they can get a preferential place on the list of the in-demand ferrari that they do want.

How much are 458s going for over-list?

Noticed William Loughran has one, LHD, no price listed.

Have to say I'm far too impatient to possibly wait 2 years for a car. The thing is I've never waited for more than 3 or 4 weeks for a car in my life. The thing is in 2 months I would probably have changed my mind on what I want, let alone 2 years.

I would also kind of feel that and in a way the novelty would have worn off a bit. I would be really excited when I placed my order but in the 2 years It would have taken for the car to arrive I would have got used to the idea that I had the car, so when it arrived it would feel quite as special. At least that's just my opinion.

Not sure but one of the well known resellers emailed me a £20,000 over initial bid after seeing a picture of mine
