Ok, so been pondering different cars for a while now as I'm growing bored of worshipping at the church of bangernomics. I want something supremely comfortable and generally wafty but something that can terrify if provoked. Budget up to £40k but less is always better.

One thought that's hard to get out of my head at the moment is the AMG CLS63. I actually like it's kooky looks and give it's a 4-seat, 4-door, sofa barge which can knock on the door of 200mph (should the limiter fall off), I think it's this kinda ball park I want to be playing in.

Alternatives?

Old-gen RS6... should be able to get one for well under half that budget.

Then set aside the other half for running costs. smile

Same goes for E39 M5... E55 AMG (the supercharged one)... etc.

The RS6 and M5 options, although accurate, are a bit too obvious and perhaps slightly too common.

The Maserati? This will be a vehicle I'll actually need to use.

I do love the XJR - in fact, it's in my top 10 all time favourite cars and probably the ultimate wolf in sheep's clothing. The only drawback is that I'm 31.

i wouldn't spend 40k on a cat d car.
Assuming it's stolen and recovered rather than accident damaged (which should be verifiable, I think), why on earth not?

because it will always have that stigma, be harder to sell unless at a big discount. At 40k plenty of straight, fast cars one can get without going the cat d route.

At 40k I would go between..

CLS 63
Maser QP
Alpina B5S
Ferrari 456
Ferrari 550

It might look cheap now, but it will feel expensive in 3 years time when nobody will buy it off you citing the suspect history, the propensity for large bills and the fact it does 2 mpg..

I'd second the QP option - it's a beautiful thing, and they seem to be holding their money reasonably well.

XKR then? Or have I missed the point of the thread?

I have to say that while I do like the CLS, a Maserati would be more of a temptation.

I know what you mean but I suspect the CLS will be easier to live with on a daily basis attract less attention.

When i had my maser QP I had a merc CLS500 for 3 weeks.

The maser had soul, passion, sound.. and everyone loved it..BUT, I was sad to give the CLS back.
