Without going into boring details I have a condition that required regular bloodtests, anywhere between three times a week and onece every three months, and for convenience I have the samples taken at the local PAth Lab,not by surgery. I have very deep veins, good but deep, and it really is a job for a good phlembotomist, my practice nurses and doctors can really struggle!

My next scheduled is in Sept, but due to some other symptoms and meds this week, my specialist (yesterday) asked me to go in and have my regular test done today, and as it happened my GP ordered several different tests also. I called the path lab to check when they had Plebotomist in, and asked as a favour if they could do the docs samples too. No favour needed was the reply, it's what we do, bring your envelope in between 9 and 12 today.
Great, so in I go. I am always friendly, last year I was in about 40 times! I should also add my regular test is done privately and so I pay £50 a throw for the privlige, but the convenience is good and although an NHS facility, you are seen pretty quick etc.

So today I go in and the waiting room is pretty full, about 10 people all there. I say hi, giove them my envelope, but because my regular test is not actually due til Sept, I havent had the paerwork for it, but they say no problem, they know about it and will do it manually. The docs blood tests were requested by a locum who could not work the computer properly and was unable to print the snazzy stickers with patient details etc, so again, these would have to be manually filled out on the sample viles.

The Phlebotomist comes out and it is a lady I "know" only through having my blood taken. But I've not seen her for many months, she's aprt time now, a nice lady about 60 odd, but very good, no nasty jabs etc! As she comes out to get more envelopes from reception, (they call people in roatatin) she waved a quick hello to me. Then saw all the pateints in front of me in order. After abotu a 20 min wait, a lady came in with her mother in a cheelchair and checked in, but appologised for being late for her appt with my Specialist. He is always runningg late, so they said, oh dont worry, but they WERE late, and admitted it on entry. It appears They needed samples taken before they saw him and the appt with him was 11.30. They arrived at 11.35 on my watch.

We all sa there, Iwas next in, but waite about 5 minutes with these people. Another ;ady came in whilst I was sat in their with the late arrivals, but that was all, so they should be after me.

I got called in at 11.40 ish, they'd maybe been there 5-8 minutes before i went in.

Now what i didn't reralise is I needed about 11 viles of blood for these various tests! We start chatting as she goes abtuo pinning me, door to waiting room is wide open. She gets 4 viles aswe chat about her travels, (she goes away a lot) and she's been to three places since i last saw her.
Then the vacuum on the next batch of viles seems to have gone, 5th vile (frist from new batch) doesnt work, she gets annother and that's the same. So out comes the needle and we start in the other arm. New batch all goes ok, she is telling me about this trip to Vegas they have had, all very freindly. But by the time the blood is all taken, I have been in there between 5 and 10 minutes, genuinely no more than that, but longer than my normal test. Plus, she has had to write my rather long name on 11 viles of blood, and one "looked a bit short, so she redid it.

So as I am holding my arm up with the cotton wool on the wound, and she is filling out my paperwork, and i am talking about the delights of peter Leugers in NY, where she is going for hubbys 65th in Nov, this figure appears in the doorway and enters the consultation room. A tall geezer, about 60 odd i'd guess, walks right over to me / us, and says, "come on, come on, there's some people out here who have an 11.30 with "Dr xxx"! So she says, without even looking up, yes, we wont be a moment, can you wait outside.....? "Well just hurry up, he snarls!"
Now this fella had not even arrived by the time I went in, so he had waited about 10 mins max. ...I'd already waited for 20-25 mins before i went in! Also, I noted he was "complaining for the other people", not himself.

So we just shake our heads in disbelief, and I go to leave, as I walk out she is telling me when to call for the results, I thank her and exit the room to the waiting area. I always walk accross the room not just stiaght out, to say thanks and cheerio to the receiptionits and office workers, so in doing so, I venture toward goon who just walked in on me. As I look to go over there, I see and hear him look at the latecomers, clap, and say "at last".....!
Now we'd been having a chat, but at ALL times this woman was working, or trying to! I find it takes my mind off the needles which I still cannot look at (wimp!).
So I let this go, being a decent chap, walk toward him to go to the reception and as i get closer, he mutters "finished your chit chat then?" I've just walked past him, so stop and go over. He remains seated and I sensed he thought "Uh Oh, too far now!", he looked like he was bricking it! At this point these latecomers have still not been called in! So as he is a fair bit older than me, I dont want to scare the guy so stand back a bit, and lean over and say, "look fella, i am not sure what your beef is, but dont give me or these guys a hard time, she's just had to get 11 viles of blood out of me!" So he replies, "I know i have to have that much taken too". So I said, "well I am sure you understand not every here does it the same way and it tkaes a bit of time to get it out of some patients." All very polite. To which he replies in muted but clearly audible volume to the whole waiting room, "Yes, especially as Cxnt like you!".......
I couldn't fking believe it! He's some 65 year old coffin dodger and I am a 16 stone 6ft 2 40 year old!
So having had enough of his attitude (which was properly uncalled for), I lent forward to him and whispered, if you speak to me like that again I will knock your f'in block off!" He seemed a bit worried and muttered, "er, Ok, sorry!"
I said "no problem" and walked away to the reception, to say thanks, but as I did, he starts heckling me again...! Just a "see you then!", in a cheery voice! WTF. So I ask the reception who the guy is and why he just interupted my consult. They were horrified, came out of the booth and i pointed him out. So they go in to speak to the Plebotomist, and he carries on with the abuse toward me. "I'll see you later!" I replied, "you better hope not fella" and kept my distance. I'm not hot headed generally, and realised that any fisticuffs would end in him getting hurt and me getting sued!

So they come out and speak to him, and ask him to calm down and that he is not to enter the consult rooms again. He starts saying, "she's chatting away to her boyfriend and we are all waiting!" So they call for security, who arrive very quickly and surround him, there is a big fracas, the phlbotamist leaves her consult room and goes behind a security door and he hurls abuse at her, and the people waiting for the 11.30 still have not got in there!

So his stupidity cost him and people behind me a delay of at least 15 minutes, and they will probably need to see someone else now who may not be as good taking blood!

I am disappointed in myself a little for using the "f word" to him, but it was very muted and not as bad as his language at all. But i really cannot understand some people. Firstly why he thinks he has the right to barge into a consult anyway, and with respect, he'd only been there 10 mins himself, so hardly an inconvenience.
What is an inconvenience is they just called me and said that this guy now wants to make a complaint about the Phlbotomist takign too long to take my blood and can I provide a statement to them too!

What an utter Monkey Spunking cock socket!

Oh yes, it was not a proper rant. He only walked his disease ridden carcass into my lenghty blood letting proceedures, it is not like he flashed me after I'd overtaken him, or anything, or parked accross two spaces!! biggrin

Nutters use the NHS as well as nice normal people. Sounds like you kept fairly calm and the guy got what was coming to him.

I think I might have dragged him outside where I could have had a more "thorough" word with him. His advanced age or not, he's obviously a bully and gets away with it because people don't put him right.

... and after you warned him and he kept mouthing off, he'd have had it from me.

People are idiots and it's not just NHS, I've had patients shout and rant at me for all kinds of stupid reasons.

Good for you for standing up to the stupid prick.

I just called them at the lab and asked what it was all about and appologised for any influence i had on it escalating. Receptionist said, "dont worry, they guy is a troublemaker and we know all about him! Anyway, it makes the day go quicker, a bit of excitement in the place!"

Silly old farts like this obviously don't realise when they are out of line as they haven't been challenged before. The good news is that he has probably had his card marked and will be treated differently (read kept waiting) by the staff on future visits. Hopefully he will formally complain and you will have a chance to explain how he entered a consulting room without permission, annoyed the waiting room in general and disturbed what should be a quite and relaxing environment, ie: he is a security threat now. This could lead to the facility not wanting to treat him going forward.

Personally, I probably wouldn't have bitten my tongue as long as you did and amde it clear to him he was a tt. If you are old enough to open your mouth and spout out an opinion you are old enough to face up to the reaction your remarks can create.
