Just like the government keep telling us, kids today are clever and work hard, so don't be surprised when they get good marks. Us oldies are a bit thick and lazy by comparison and as for our parents, two short planks and couldn't get of bed at all.

That explains why grades keep getting better.

They don't do it like that any more.

Other wise you can't make it look like kids are getting smarter.

When I went to university, many years ago, four B's at higher was a fairly usual arts course entrance requirement. Somewhere like Glasgow or Edinburgh Uni would need that for a course like English Literature or Geography, Psychology etc. Courses like Law were two As and two Bs I think medicine was three As and a B. I can't imagine what results most courses require now.

Then most schools did highers in one year and then six form studies or another higher in the final year.

Staying on at school for another year. Taking a Higher in Art and an Advanced Higher in English.

He'd then like to then go to college/uni and get a degree in Art & Design.

What is a higher, or an advanced higher, are they the equivelent of 'O' and 'A' levels?

Edinburgh still state BBBB in one sitting as the entry requirement in the prospectus for all courses but that's simply to encourage as many people as possible to apply. You're very unlikely to get in without grades in the region of AAAAB, especially for high demand subjects.

Standard Grade = GCSE = O Grade
Higher Grade = AS Level
Advanced Higher = A Level

(There or thereabouts, they don't sit exactly on par)

Only the 2 subjects? His timetable will be pretty sparse. You could recommend he looks at possible college/uni courses now to double check entry requirements, check year 1 syllabus to see if there are any other complimentary classes he can take this year and possibly speak to the admissions tutor for advice and a 'foot in the door'.

He is very good at art, but wanted to leave that exam for a year as he wanted to concentrate on the other subjects. He hopes to make a career in some area of graphic art, both physical art (drawing/illustrating) and electronic art (he wants Photoshop for Christmas!)

Plan B is journalism.

Plan C is cartography.

No problem with the charlie - he's been injecting drugs for years.*

  • Insulin - he's diabetic.

Has he considered Higher Graphic Communication if the school offers it? Would complement Higher Art, particularly in terms of technical drawing, which is presumably useful for cartography. Failing that AH Geography is good - unlike the Higher you don't need to learn huge amounts of information but instead a few skills which you apply to everything you've learned at SG/Higher. Was 70% coursework and you could revise the lot in 15 mins (although not recommended!)

Yes, 'Do you want fries with that' is a phrase he should maybe start practising.
Not trying to be flippant/funny but I don't think I know anyone who has an 'arts degree' that actually does anything vaguely related to it.

I thought most half decent universities had brought in their own entrance exams nowadays - such is their faith in the quality of the current system.
