Vauxhall - Lifetime Warranty!?

I've just read that every new Vauxhall will come with a lifetime warranty (100,000 miles) from later this year.
It's never entertained me to purchase a Vauxhall and I've never had a desire to own one really, but a lifetime warranty is pretty damn impressive!
Can the likes of Ford, VW, Audi, BMW, etc continue to offer a meagre 3 years? Some of them may think they are offering a premium product, but where's their own warranty to back this up? First there was Kia, Hyundia, Toyota and the likes with 5 years +, and now Vauxhall are in on the act.

I suspect someone's done the maths and realised that if it hasn't broken before 40,000 miles, it's likely to be fine until it's hit 100,000 miles, so it's likely to cost them little once they've added the extra money they'll get from forcing the customer to take it to the dealer for servicing

Where you can be almost certain that there will be a litany of faults and components that need replacing that fall outside of the warranty criteria... Or am I being a cynic?! 
Interesting. Volvo did this in the mid 90's. It only applied to the original owner of the car and it had to have full Volvo service history. The scheme didn't last more than a couple of years. They did honour the warranty though. My dad had an 850 where the engine went bang when it was 6 years old. New engine was fitted at Volvo's cost with no quibbles. I wonder if Vauxhalls offering will be as impressive.
I find this lifetime warranty on products a bit of a bugbear, of course the devil will be in the detail but what do they mean by lifetime?

Duncan Aldred, managing director of Vauxhall, said: "At Vauxhall we are confident in the quality of our products, the engineering behind them and the people who build them. We set the highest standards for ourselves and because we have confidence in the quality of our vehicles we want to make sure that customers benefit from that confidence too.
"Vauxhall Lifetime Warranty therefore becomes a natural extension to the appeal of our products which represents a huge step forward not just for Vauxhall but for the whole UK motor industry
