Am I right or wrong?
Discussion
Need a bit PH general opinion.
I lived with what was once a good mate back a good 7 years ago. Generally we had a really great time and partied pretty hard. Over the months though tempers frayed a few times and I choose it as a good time to leave, buy a house and get my own place.
The agreement we had back then was that I'd contact all the relevant energy companies and obtain a final balance and we'd close the accounts down. This was done and to both our knowledge the accounts closed.
Fast forward to now.
I check my Experian report and see there's an outstanding balance on one account that I knew nothing about. I call up British Gas and they give me the address and dates to when the balance was acrued.
OK, I was somewhat perplexed but thought that I'd run it by said mate and just make him aware that there is a small amount outstanding that must have slipped through the net and if BG were adamant that 'would we be ok to split it?'.
I dropped the lad that text and it wasn't well received. He told me that he in no uncertain terms that he wouldn't be paying anything towards it.
To me this seems wrong. OK it's on my credit report and in my name so technically the responsibility lies with me unless I can prove otherwise. Morally, I feel he should contribute if the bill was from when we were living together.
His argument was that he found an outstanding bill and simply paid it. Mine was that it was his choice to make that decision and if he believed I owed something he should have said. I'd have shared the bill.
To play devils advocate a bit. He also said that I'm rarely in touch with him. (irrelevant to me and I'm 300 miles away in the RAF and have a serious relationship that my weekends are dedicated to) and also he paid that other bill.
Sometimes you just don't know whether you're right or wrong.. this is one of those times. He's a pretty intelligent chap, wildly stubborn and would probably out argue me hence the consensus requirement.
PH, set me straight.

Go on then, how much was it?
£37.64?
haha.. close.. a tad under £60. Pennies to some, more to others. I'm just obscenely principled, to my own detriment sometimes. You use half, you pay half...
£37.64?
I'm going to get barraged with people calling me a tightwad now I know it.

I was keen to settle the bill for actual energy used over winter but the more I moaned to my GF and my friends about that 'prick that dodged the winter bill' the more annoying people found me. Eventually sucked it up, paid and and come next pay day everything was rosey again.
You don't want your colleagues (do you call them that in the forces?) and your partner getting pissed off with your 'tightwad' rants.
As above, life is far to short.

Uh, in some respects then I can see his point, especially as your bill was only £60. Your two bills have netted off!?!?Yeah yeah point taken.
In fairness to me I haven't mentioned it to anyone. It only came up yesterday and I questioned whether I was right and asked the masses.
I got an answer, have said to him I'll sort it already so not much more can be done.
As for him settling a bill, I sincerely doubt there ever was one. IMO he'd say anything to 'win' an argument/debate.
Do I want him as a mate? Not really no, he earns a lot and shouts about it, is pretty self important and generally makes me and few other 'mates' feel inadequate. Haven't spoken to him in months and doubt I will. In fairness, he'd probably call me a few things and maybe he'd be right.
