Job application made but closing date extended

I applied for a job a week ago, along with a couple of colleagues, but the closing date has now been extended. I'm interested in knowing what this might mean. Is it likely that none of us are suitable for interview? I guess I'll find out in a few weeks either way but I was wondering if anyone could shed any light. The only time I've heard of this happening before is when there weren't any applicants.

Perhaps they had a target quota of candidates and failed to receive sufficient applications.

My guess is that the "favourite" candidate didn't apply - is someone off sick/on holiday?

Cheers for the replies. It's a job somewhere else so I wouldn't know if there's any internal favourites. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Or the person handling it is away, nobody knows what to do, so they are buying time until they get back.
