griff headlamp sealant

My perspex headlamp covers need resealing to the body - can anyone recommend a suitable sealant to use,
I assume its either polyurethane or silicone (high modulus ?) , also any advice about what is used for
fixing the windscreen rubbers (top and bottom) too would be a real help ?

By strange coincidence I went to the local chandlry yesterday to get some Sikaflex only to be told they no longer sell it and now sell something called SABA Sealtack 751 as a replacement product.

I have the specsheet here with me today and it looks pretty good, but its £10 a tube so a bit expensive to take a chance on.

Has anyone used this stuff?

I fixed my top winscreen rubber which started flapping with Evo Stick One Part Polysulphide Sealer, available from Jewsons. Sticks like $ht to a blanket. I have wind tested it since with no adverse effects

I cant exactly remember the price but I think its about £8.50 - £9.00. Standard cartridge size.

Not sure if its suitable for the perspex headlight covers though.

Thanks very much , I'll get some TIGERSEAL, I've heard of SIKAFLEX used on boat fittings,
assume you mask around the body / perspex to avoid the stuff getting everywhere.?

Hello Griffert, in the end I bought Tigerseal from ebay and it arrived withing a couple of days but it wasn't exactly lightening fast delivery.

I can't find a 'best before end' date anywhere, so I'm hoping this stuff doesn't go off like the Sikaflex did because I bought 2 tubes.

When I've used Sikaflex to do the headlight pods in the past I followed a guide somewhere on the net. I'll find it and stick a link here because it has some really useful tips on how to get a good finish.
I think I got a nice edge last time I did it by leaving it a day then gently going around 'cutting' a clean edge with my thumb nail.

I have some stuff at work that is an equivalent to sikaflex,soudaflex FC 40,I took some up to the Growl a few years ago,they are £3.50 a tube

Just noticed the Sikaflex starting to peel off the near side cover when I washed the car on Sunday and was wondering what I should use to re-seal. Only about 2-3 inches peeling at the moment but its bound to start getting worse rapidly !!

Any luck on finding that linky guide to re-sealing Ian ?

I haven't been able to find the internet article I talked about despite searching TheGriffithPages, TCP and here, and I haven't even been near the garage so I'm sorry to report I've failed on all counts :-(

I think the tips boiled down to how to fit the light pod and leaving the light to stick for 24hrs before attempting to seal it from the outside.
And I recall something about using a plastic garden plant marker as the tool for getting the right profile on the sealant.
TBH, I use the same process as when I do kitchen/bathroom seals, lots of kitchen roll, a spray bottle of water and my finger.
Leave any excess to dry and cut the edge cleanly where you need to with a sharp knife then peel off all the excess.

i think that sounds right.

Anyone else used tiger seal ?

Is the original sealant used Sikaflex 291 then, there seeem to be quite a few places to get a tube of this on the net ?

If your light is fitted solidly and its just a cosmetic bead your wanting to put around the pod then try Dumdum http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?productID=8... its very easy to use and if you make a mistake very easy to rectify unlike silicone based sealers.

Hi Simon I'm in the middle of a 4" body lift and was really happy as very little rust found just a bit of surface rust in a couple of the inner corners, the body is back on the chassis now and just the rear arms to repaint and get back on so hope to see you at Chatsworth if not before.
