Steering Rack Problems?

Getting some nasty grinding noises from the power steering when I turn a corner and think it may be a problem with the Steering Rack

The garage have tried to replace the seals but this only seemed to last for 2-3 weeks before it dumped all its oil on my garage floor again

So, my questions:-

- Are the seals going due to rack wear and tear or poor workmanship?
- I've seen Steering Rack sealant advertised on eBay - has anyone used this and is it any good?
- If I need a replacement can anyone advise between recon and new and where is the best place to source one from?

Depending on if you want to travel then try http://www.xworksservice.co.uk/ They know ex factory people though I would think you would need to take the car to them to have the work done.

Having done a little research on the subject, it seems that Kiley Clinton are very highly regarded for refurb work. I just sent my rack off to them and now awaiting it's return.

Did you get a whirring noise when you turned the wheel with the car being stationary?

I didn't notice, but it definitely makes a noise when moving

What's the significance of the whirring when stationary?

I was only asking as I started to get this noise from my car recently. Also I noticed that there are a few drips of power steering fluid in my parking space.. The garage said that it could be the seals that need changing, but the diagnosis was made over the phone.

Sounds like it might be the start of a similar problem although hopefully the seal replacement will fix yours

How much are they charging you, if you don't mind me asking?

I need to decide what to do with my old one.

I think it depends on what they find when they strip it....Mine is only leaking and they have quoted about £180

Don't use anyone else KC are ace

I'd also replace all your flexible hoses while it's out (they degrade internally and are part of the reason the rack fails) and fit a Magnefine ATF filter in the return line to catch any detritus. The filter is about £30.
