It probably doesn't need a respray- just his wife probably insists he drives a VW diesel and he wishes he had one.

^^^ thats a load of crap, maybe he owns a mint restored car of some sort himself or maybe the OPs car does have more than its fair share of battle scars and the guy thought the OP had done the sensible thing and restore mechanical parts that make a difference then worry about a bit of paintwork.

Why would a stranger walking past make that comment then?

Edit: Just noticed you own a collection of VWs.

He's probably just messing with you, having seen you clean it for the last 2 days!

I get that all the time when I'm doing mine

Google is great...

So thats his car is it??

I meant a picture (in good light) so we could see what quality the paintwork is in and give our opinions!

Maybe he'd seen how much time you spent cleaning it and was having a laugh?

Some people are unable to appreciate older cars in good condition and assume it'll need respraying to look good. They're usually the types who take their cars to a car wash and think it comes out looking better. If only they knew what could be done with a detailer who knows what they're doing.

I reckon "respray" was slang...
He wants to pull one off on the bonnet.
