I've noticed an increasing number of sensors like the ones for traffic lights set into the surface of motorways at regular intervals. They seem to appear when the roads have any major work and generally consist of four lines across below the surface of the road and more lines linking them.I assume they are some sort of speed related system - anyone know what?
is it the infrastructure for a future big brother speed system?
or am I just being paranoid

They seem to be every 1/4 mile on most motorways now. I'm sure they are the same system as Truvelo or speed sensing probably for traffic speed monitoring.

I think they're just for traffic management, I've been over them a some silly speeds (late at night) many many many many times and nothing has ever happened.

I think they are possibly sensors for the new MIDAS signs. These are the big new signs on the nearside of M/Ws which give the motorist more info' on hold-ups queues etc. But, then again I may be wrong!

I think you are right - because these lines appear near the Gantries and these big MIDAS signs!

Sadly the info is more along the lines of

"Don't use a mobile whilst driving"

rather than

"HUGE traffic jam ahead, turn off now!!!!"

They are for the Midas signs etc.

They are there to warn of major hold ups in the area but when everything is running smoothly then instead of them being turned off, they give out road safety messages, warning the numpties not to use their phones etc etc.

I seem to recall a page on the SafeSpeed web site that talked about huge investment going into this EVI system. According to my understanding of what it amounts to it sounds very menacing from my point of view, and I think we want nothing to do with it.

Best wishes all.
Dave.

presuamably of they start to be mis-used by the police and authorities e.g. revenue collection purposes then a small quantity of petrol accidentally spilt in the road say when filling ones tank and ignited by a loose match would quickly render them useless? Rich...

They've been around for many years. Suspect Trafficmaster etc. information systems use them to determine traffic speeds and hence the locations of jams to notify customers of.
