For some reason one of the ITV satellite channels has got these rolling round at the moment first thing in the morning when I'm getting ready for work.
I'd forgotten what terrific films they were. I remember going to see them at the cinema as a kid and enjoying them then but they are two of those movies that you can't help watching when they turn up on TV. Great cinematography, funny, great performances, incredibly well cast and a very downbeat ending.

But Ollie Read's performance in it is quite exceptional. His portrait of a fighter bound by honour, regret and panache but who's rage comes out in every battle is just spell binding. I read somewhere that the Spanish stuntmen became very reluctant to fight him as he was actually taking it to the max and landing blows.

Great films. thumbup

Yep, the comedy is very simple and has stood up well.

Plus Raquel Welch...

Great films, the little quietly spoken lines by extras are brilliant. Like the Sedan Chair carriers saying how their arms hurt and Milady must have put on weight when they drop her off biggrin Ones from the late great Roy Kinnear as well.

Spike Milligan "that's my Constance, she doesn't live her she lives at the Palace but she visits me once a month......[body shakes] today in fact"

I guess you noticed that Jean-Pierre Cassel (King Louis) is strangely dubbed by Richard Briers, because he could speak very good English anyway.

Plus the lovely Nicole Calfan (Kitty). biggrin
