Protecting a classic's numberplate.

The front numberplate on my MGB is looking very tatty and worn out by stonechips picked up on a few trips to Le Mans!
I've had a replacement black and silver aluminium one made up.

Was wondering if I could protect it with a coat of something to stop it getting tatty so quickly.
Any ideas?

Wrap it in cotton wool?

What about some clear vinyl over it?

Was thinking of giving it a quick lick of some kind of matte clear varnish (does that even exist!)
Cotton wool would just get soggy, non?!

Your spot on with the matt / Satin varnish as stocked in most DIY stores, it can be thinned and sprayed on if you want a perfect finish
