Sub 1k what car for you. The only requirement is as relaible as possible and not
mental on insurance, tpft only prolly so around insurance group 14-16 max.

I've looked at BMW 320 tourings and Volvo 850 T5s as I like both of these
and they are practical and mre grown up now, but I don't necessarily need that, just want something sensible, not crappy, reasonable performance and not too expensive to run, I do 10 miles round trip a day to work plus social and domestic and going 40 miles round to my parents most weekend with the gf for Sunday dinner so maybe 7k a year

any ideas greatly received.

Saab 9000/95 or Subaru Legacy had both and can say nice places to be...

There are various hatches around, Clio, Corsa, Astra, Fiesta, Saxo etc but actually I would be more amenable to a barge than a hatch for that money just because I think they have a general better build quality and while it will be older with mega miles (like a hatch will be) it will wear that usage well. Also chances are for a larger part of its life it was better looked after, IMHO of course.

+1 for the Saab 9000. There are some proper bargains around.

Seen a few decent looking Mercedes 190's in the classifieds for less than a grand recently.
